VJ Day

World War II ended when Japan surrendered to the United States on August 15, 1945. The surrender was announced on August 14, 1945, in the United States because of the differences in time zones, so we celebrate August 14 as Victory Over Japan Day, or VJ Day. Pictured above are denizens of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, proudly displaying the Knoxville Journal proclaiming the end of the war.
