Prince Hisahito graduates from kindergarten

14 MARCH 2013

Dressed smartly in a shirt, tie and navy blue blazer Prince Hisahito of Japan, 6, attended his kindergarten's graduation ceremony. Accompanied by his father Prince Akishino and mother Princess Kiko, the youngster arrived at Ochanomizu University, which is affiliated with the nursery, for his big day.

Hisahito's proud parents posed with their son as he showed off his scroll from the Tokyo-based school he attended for three years. Having now finished at the kindergarten the young royal is now moving on to Ochanomizu University Elementary School, located in Tokyo's educational Bunkyo district.

After attending the school, little Hisahito has become the first Imperial family member in the postwar period to break with the tradition of attending Gakushuin Primary School, also in Japan's capital. Having passed a entrance exam, based on behavioral observation, Hisahito will now join many of his friends from kindergarten at his next school.

All eyes are on the young royal as he is third in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, despite being the current heir apparent's nephew. Given the succession law in Japan that states only men can be Emperor, Prince Naruhito's daughter is excluded from the succession line meaning Naruhito's brother Akishino and his son Hisahito are second and third in line respectively.

Hisahito was the first male born to the Imperial House of Japan for 41 years, since his father was born in 1965.
