Last week FC Kansas City’s league opener stood out as the outlier in attendance, more than doubling any other figure. There were only two games in Week 2, and Portland Thorns FC’s home debut completely skewed the league average having outdrawn all four Week 1 games combined.

Portland’s 16,479 fans is more than any standalone (not doubleheader) Women’s Professional Soccer game drew from 2009-2011. That record belongs to the July 20, 2011 game between the Western New York Flash and magicJack, which brought 15,404 fans to Sahlen’s Stadium as part of the US team’s (and Abby Wambach’s) homecoming from a World Cup runners-up position.

Here’s a look at National Women’s Soccer League attendance figures through Week 2 (six games):

Average attendance to date: 5,722
(Without Portland: 3,571)

Total attendance to date: 34,332
(Without Portland: 17,853)

Western New York Flash @ Washington Spirit (Maryland SoccerPlex) — 4,569 (sellout)

Seattle Reign FC @ Portland Thorns FC (JELD-WEN Field) — 16,479

These other stadia might be small, but at least we’re selling ‘em out!

jetzt braucht ihr nur noch eine fankultur, und die clubs sollten die nächsten 5 jahre bestehen bleiben.

    sie dürfen nicht pleite gehen.

How dare you say something like that! She’s a nice lady!

Fan culture we have in Portland. Come by and visit our fanladen sometime, just a few blocks from the stadium.

Somewhere in each city in this league there must be a bigger stadium. If you’re selling out smaller venues, there’s a good chance you’re leaving money on the table (yes, it’s more complicated than that, but the point stands). Let’s get KC into Sporting Park just to start with!

        Baby steps…

The Red Stars nearly killed the team renting Toyota Park.

1st year you show what you can do. 2nd year, figure out if you can step up without doing damage to what you accomplished in year 1.

I’m very disappointed with the WNY Flash marketing department. Social media and tweets are fine but most people live busy lives and they are best reached by television and newspaper. How many tv ads have we seen about the Flash home opener? None. How many ads have we seen in the paper about the Flash home opener? None. If there are less than 5,000 at the home opener then the Flash need to blame their marketing department and not Rochester soccer fans.
