◇Doors open on new Kabukiza Theatre
The Kabukiza Theatre in Tokyo's Ginza district held its first performances on April 2 after a three‐year, top‐to‐bottom rebuild was finished earlier this year.
Kabuki lovers waited in the rain for the theater doors to open at 10:30 a.m. Then they went inside and saw the new interior for the first time. The theater was completely rebuilt, but the architects kept many features from previous versions of the Kabukiza. The first Kabukiza Theatre was finished in 1889.
Kabukiza is holding three performances daily until April 28. The morning show is a set of three plays. The first is called "Kotobuki Iwau Kabuki no Irodori," starring national treasure Sakata Tojuro. The next play, "Oma‐tsuri," stars Bando Mitsugoro and Nakamura Fukusuke and is dedicated to the late 18th Nakamura Kanzaburo. The final play is "Kumagai Jinya," starring Nakamura Kichiemon, about a famous battle between the Genji and Heike clans.
