| Japanese Seafood Industry Rebounds |
Exports of Japanese seafood products to the United States and
other markets have staged a strong rebound since the nuclear
plant accident and tsunami a year ago. According to Japan's
Ministry of Finance, seafood exports to the US alone during 2011
exceeded $295 million, a 10.2% increase from 2010.
The industry will be out in force at the International Boston
Seafood Show March 11. Exhibitors at the Japan Pavilion (Booth
#1967) will include Ahjikan Co.,Ltd., Sapporo Chou Suisan Cp., a
wholesaler of frozen scallops; Ahjikan Co. Ltd., a producer of
crab sticks; Kanabe Co., Ltd., a supplier of scallops, oyster fry
and yellowtail; Osaki Suisan Co., Ltd., developer of the worlds
first bar-shaped crab flavored fish cake; and Tosakatsuo Suisan
Co., Ltd, a producer of line-caught skipjack tuna products.
"Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Ministry of
Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF), in
collaboration with municipalities and industry organizations, has
conducted thorough monitoring of fishery products across the
country," said Joji Morishita, counselor of the Fisheries Agency
of Japan.
"These efforts have unequivocally reaffirmed the safety of
seafood product exports," Morishita said. "We hope to allay any
potential buyer concerns, while also demonstrating Japans
resilience and commitment to delivering safe, healthy and
high-quality seafood to the global marketplace.
