Instructions on the Use of Synthroid
Make sure that you clarify on the right usage of this medicine with your doctor.  For standard cases, the medicine is taken three times a day before every meal.  It should be taken with the stomach empty and one hour at least before eating.

There are certain medications that react with Levothyroxine with reduced efficacy as a result.  These medications are sodium polystyrene, iron, calcium carbonate, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, orlistat, simethicone, antacids, sucralfate,  and colesevelam.  The list here may not be complete, so ask your doctor.  Ask him also about foods that reduce Levothyroxine activity.
For those who are taking iron or calcium supplements, the advice is to avoid taking them within 4 hours of Synthroid ingestion.  For soy products, make allowance of about three hours.
In one research, coffee has been found to interfere with Levothyroxine activity.
Dosage
This medicine is available in 3 doses – 50-, 75- and 100-mg doses.  Your physician will determine the right dosage for you by examining your laboratory results and by basing it on your medical condition, age, weight and others.  Medication compliance is also closely monitored by the doctor.  He will also give you advice on the right diet to have.
Remember this:  Usually, thyroid treatments are used for the rest of the patient’s life.  You must not stop taking Synthroid on your own volition.  You must consult first with your doctor.
Synthroid dosing must be carefully controlled.  This drug is very effective in weight loss purposes, but overdoses may cause other thyroid hormones to have very low amounts in the blood.  So, follow the dosage instruction of your physician carefully.
