One of the things that we, at compare-processors.com have been doing for last couple of years is to keep a track of the gap between Intel and AMD. And so far, the results have pointed out that the gap between Intel and AMD has been widening – in favor of Intel. So how does it looks like in Q4 2012. - AMD has a revenue of $1.16 billion in Q4 2012- which is down 32% year over year ( i.e. compared to Q4 2011). - Intel on the other hand has a revenue of … Read entire article »

Bringing Manufacturing back to US

When Apple announced its intention to manufacture Macs in U.S., there was a bit of optimism as it would potentially create 200 or so jobs, it so utterly needs in the downward economy. Apple used to manufacture and assemble many of its products until late 1990s when it decided to shift its manufacturing base to far off in China. However, looking back over the past year, we don’t see jobs in the U.S. PCB industry coming back. Why is this? Gray McQuarrie throws some light on the December issue of PCB Magazine that landed a while ago in our email box. Gray asks some serious questions that requires careful analysis. He finds it strange is that amidst the political rivalry ( between democrats and republicans), nobody seems to … Read entire article »

Nexus 4 Vs iPhone 5

Nexus 4 Vs iPhone 5

Google was late entrant into the smartphone arena, but the speed with which it matured is nothing less than spectacular. Google’s first smartphone, Nexus one was launched in May 2010, which changed the course and set the direction of Android phones pitted against Apple’s iOS. For Nexus One, Google chose HTC as manufacturing partner. Nexus one lacked the graphics horsepower, other wise a phone of great utility at that time. Since then Google has launched … Read entire article »

iPad Mini Vs Nexus 7

Apple started accelerating the smaller version of its flagship tablet immediately after the launch of Amazon’s Kindle fire, which was the first tablet, making serious inroad into Apple’s market share. Kindle Fire could not sustain its success. It was not an iPad killer and it was hard to sustain simply on price point. At $199, it was just affordable for middle income group who looked for Holiday bargain shopping when it launched … Read entire article »

In UK, potential buyers woke up in morning to find that new Nexus 4 has already sold out. Google’s flagship phone started its sale at 8:30 AM in the morning and was out of stock within 10 minutes. This indicates a great success for Google and a good chance of catching up Apple’s iPhone in terms of the number of sales. One of the reasons for the huge demand is the relatively lower price of … Read entire article »

Intel Q3 2012 Revenue

Stock market analysts, especially ones involved in tech sectors, closely watch Intel’s quarterly results for simple reasons. A strong Intel result is an indication of a general buying surge and confidence in consumer market. Intel has a virtual monopoly of the PC processor market and are unaffected by competition. A growth or fall in the revenue is therefore a reflection of the demand for the processors and therefore PCs and technology. Let us take a quick look at the Intel’s Revenue and profit of Q3, 2012 compared to the same quarter a year ago. The best periods to compare is the same time a year ago. And therefore, we have presented the table for the Q3 2012 with respect to Q3 2011. (Comparison with previous quarter does not make sense, as the … Read entire article »

Inside Apple A6 processor

Phil Schiller official announcement that iPhone 5 is powered by A6 SoC was devoid of any meaningful information. It had no information on number of cores or clock frequency. Other websites just relayed this information without digging any further. Apple did not divulge any information about the clock frequency, number of cores, details of CPU or GPU core and the memory bandwidth. All it said was about the CPU and GPU performance – twice as fast as the earlier A5 processor. The A6 CPU core is not based upon the ARM A9 or the A15 but is Apple’s own design, something parallel to Krait cores. The design does uses the ARMv7 instruction sets. The iPhone 5 works only with iOS 6.0, and is not backward compatible with earlier iOS versions. … Read entire article »

What is new in iPhone 5

What is new in iPhone 5

Rumors over. The iPhone 5 has finally been launched and unlike the previous iPad launch, Apple did not chose to name it something meaningless like a “new iPhone”. It is plain iPhone 5 – simple. iPhone 5 does not make any dramatic change from previous iPhones. You still have the same user Interfacce, though backed by a better and improved iOS6 operating system. But Apple made a number of changes to improve user experience. Let us … Read entire article »

Sandy Bridge Architecture

For the last six years Intel has been successfully alternating its tick tock model to keeps processor performance improving. A tick is a change is the manufacturing processor while a tock is a change in the processor architecture. Sandy Bridge is basically is tock as far as the processor architecture is changed. Intel made moderate changes in the processor core and some significant change in the integrated graphics. The Integrated graphics, which was on a … Read entire article »

Ivy Bridge Architecture

Ivy Bridge Architecture

Ivy Bridge Introduction Improvement in the processor performance can be brought about in two ways. The first is by improving or changing the basic processor architecture and the second is by improving the manufacturing process ( basically change in the Lithography). In processor parlance, we call it the tick tock process. A tick is a manufacturing process change – for example, shrinking the die 32 nm to 22 nm lithography. A tock change is basic processor … Read entire article »

Radeon HD 7310 and HD 7340

The Radeon HD 7310 and the HD 7340 are the integrated graphics in the AMD’s Brazos 2.0 Accelerated Processing Units ( APUs) that were launched around June 2012. The Brazos processors have been very successful for AMD as these are much better than what Intel has to offer with its Atom processors. While AMD did ship close to 50 millions of these chips, they have not been able to make much profit on it because they have been priced ultra low. The two APUs that have the HD 7310 and the HD 7340 are the E2-1200 and E2-1800 respectively. Let us take a look at the complete APUs with special focus on their … Read entire article »
