Tokyo, March 15 (Jiji Press)--Asian Development Bank President Haruhiko Kuroda won approval from Japan's Diet Friday to become the next governor of the Bank of Japan with a crucial mission of helping shore up the nation's economy with monetary policy.
The government's nomination of Kuroda, 68, to the top central bank post was endorsed by a majority vote at a plenary meeting of the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of the Diet, the same day, with support from the major opposition Democratic Party of Japan as well as the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito.
The opposition-controlled Upper House also voted for the nominations of BOJ Executive Director Hiroshi Nakaso, 59, and Gakushuin University Prof. Kikuo Iwata, 70, for BOJ deputy governors.
Nakaso was backed by the DPJ, the biggest force in the Upper House, and Iwata by some other opposition parties including Nippon Ishin No Kai (Japan Restoration Party), Your Party and the New Renaissance Party.
The House of Representatives, the lower chamber dominated by the ruling bloc, approved the three nominees on Thursday.
