x64 対応 Windows †
Windows 7 64bit版 †
Windows 7は当初64bit版のみとされていたが、32bitも公開された。 32bit版が提供される最後のWindowsといわれているが、 Windows Vistaでの移行が成功しなかったこともあり真偽は不明。
Microsoftも64bit版アプリケーション・ドライバの開発を強く各メーカーに働きかけており、 64bit版が主流になることが期待されている。

Windows Vista 64bit版 †
Windows Vista では x64への完全な移行が予想されていましたが、 まだx64は少数派、XPと異なり一般パッケージでも購入可能になりました。 このことにより各種ドライバ等も入手しやすくなっていますが、 ドライバの提供されないものやサポート対象外となっているものも多いです。
Vista には6つのエディションがあり、 Starter（新興市場の入門者向け機能限定版）以外のエディションでx64版がリリースされています。
最上位エディションであるUltimateのパッケージは32bit and 64bit同封、 Home Basic/Home Premium/Businessのパッケージは32bitのメディアのみだが、 送料および手数料込の実費(\1,050)を払えばService Pack適用済み64bit版のDVDをマイクロソフトから入手できる。 Enterpriseはボリュームライセンス販売のみであるため、パッケージは存在しないが、32bit/64bit双方用意されている。
DSP版は32bit or 64bitのみ販売(値段も半分)となっている。
マイクロソフトは、Windows Vista を一般のお客様向けに 2007 年 1 月 30 日から販売開始しました。

「Windows XP Professional x64 Edition」の販売が2005年4月23日(土)からスタートしました。
x86版Windows XPではなくWindows Server 2003のコードをベースにx64化されたものであるため、x86版よりも安定している。 また、標準ドライバのサポートもx86版 XP SP2よりも範囲が広い。

64bit(x64)って? †
ここでいう64bitとは、AMDが開発したx86拡張の64bit命令セットであるAMD64、
および、その互換命令セットであるIntelのEM64T(Intel64)のことです。
これらを総称してx86-64もしくはx64と呼ばれます。
Microsoftはこれに対応したWindowsをx64 Editionと発表したため現在はx64が広く使われています。
IntelのIA32の後継仕様であるIA64 Itaniumの命令セットとは別物です。
x64 CPUはx86 CPUの設計を受け継ぎ64bitへ拡張したものであり、32bit命令もネイティブ処理できるようになっています。
IA64の互換モードと異なりネイティブな実行が可能なため、x64 CPUは高速なx86 CPUとして使えます。
x86(32bit)版OSをx86 CPU同様に特別なことをせずともインストールできます。（ただしOSが対応していなければ64bitアプリは使用できない）
また、x64(64bit)OSを使用した場合にも、これまでの32bitソフトウェア資産をほとんどそのまま使えます。(例外あり)
ただし、32bitのアプリケーションから64bitのDLLを呼ぶ、
またはその逆のようなことはできません。（一つのプロセス内で32bitと64bitが混在できない）
この関係で、32bit IE用プラグインは64bit IEでは使えなかったり、32bit IMEを使って64bitアプリケーションへ入力、
といったことができないといった症状が出ているようです。
また、デバイスドライバなどは64bit専用の物を用意する必要があります。
ローレベルな制御を行うアプリケーションの64bit対応版などはドライバ部分のみ64bit化して対応している物もあります。
メリットとデメリット †
利点と欠点を簡単にまとめてみました。
前よりメリットの方が多くなりましたが、まだまだなところもあります。

- 4GBより大きなメモリが使用可能です。
- 32bitアプリでも32bitOS上で使用するよりも大きなメモリが使用可能です。
- パフォーマンスが向上します(クロックあたりのデータ処理能力が増加)
- ウイルスに感染しにくい
- 人に自慢できます

- デメリット
- 一部の32bitアプリケーションは正常に動作しない
- 16bitアプリケーションが動かない
- 古いハードウェアのドライバサポートが見込めない
- ウイルス対策ソフトが少ない(最近は解消しつつある)
- 素人には敷居が高い
- プログラムサイズが少し大きい
- 命令長が長くなるためと（こちらは軽微）、32bit版同梱の場合が多いため。
