The Kanji for the days of the week represent (from Sunday to Saturday): sun, moon, fire, water, wood, gold, and soil. Presumably, these names were derived from the names of the planets. The kanji for the names of the planets can be translated as: Mars 'fire star', Mercury 'water star', Jupiter 'wood star', Venus 'gold star', and Saturn 'soil star'. Therefore, Sunday is the sun's day, Monday is the moon's day, Tuesday is Mars' day, Wednesday is Mercury's day, Thursday is Jupiter's day, Friday is Venus' day and Saturday is Saturn's day.
