Wherever You Go

posted by February 19th, 2013

Just got so much new music this weekend- prime picks from 10 different L.A. DJ’s. And as you already know, I’m not into being a miser, so let the sharing continue! Today’s selections are more brain candy than dancefloor fillers, but I’ve got plenty of those to drop on you in the next couple weeks too. Artwork today comes courtesy of the highly talented Alia Penner, who’s work I saw at this Venice gallery recently. Dope funky-style vibrant pop steez.

Laura Mvula : Green Garden & She (Until The Ribbon Breaks Remix)
super soulful and creative vocal stylings from this soon-to-be major UK songstress.

Flume : Holdin On & I Met You ft. Anna Lunoe
moody Australian beatsmith, check more here.

Ben Pearce : What I Might Do (Club Edit)
deep house vibes from this UK producer

Theophilus London : Wine & Chocolates (andhim Remix)
Theo keepin it sexy with a nice subtle rework by this German duo

Rihanna : Nobody’s Business (Cousin Cole House Edit)
bad girl Ri Ri is not something I would normally post, but this song got way better with the addition of some classic house drums and the subtraction of Chris Brown. More from Cousin Cole here.

!!! : Slyd
glad to hear new material from these difficult-to-google dance punks

Bondax : Baby I Got That & Gold
more British beats from these kids

Little Dragon : Little Man (Vindata Remix)
slept on this bouncey remix by these local Angeleno producers

fLako : Enclosure & Mating Dance
one of my new favorite dudes putting out sounds. This guy is really standing out from the beatmaking masses with his subtle & organic sound.

inc. : The Place
more LA locals, these brothers are doing their best to keep smoothed out R&B alive, and I thank them heartily for it!

‘Til The Cops Come Knocking

Consider this my community service: to help all of you out there have a long, sweaty, freaky, grind session this Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s because I have an actual girlfriend for the first time in years, but I’m feeling particularly frisky, and I’m not that into all the commercial frills and hallmark cards. So let’s remember what this holiday is really all about, and make lots & lots of love. May this playlist help bring panties to the floor, hot wax to the skin, honey to the lips, and a nice glimpse at nirvana by way of post-coital bliss. Some oldies, some newer tracks, mostly explicitly recorded with one thing in mind, but not entirely just sex. If you happen to be all alone this year, don’t hate, it’s bad for your health. For those of you lucky enough to have someone, press play and get ready for an hour and a half of…

D’Angelo : Jonz In My Bonz
it begins with an itch that needs to be scratched

Maxwell : Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)
from the album that was Maxwell’s demo!?! “Smooth” doesn’t even cut it.

Sade : By Your Side (Cottonbelly Remix)
I’ve always loved this remix, gives the song that extra little groove with a touch of afro-latin sabor

Aaliyah : Rock The Boat
had to include the undisputed princess of R&B

Pretty Ricky : On The Hotline
who woulda thought a song about 900 numbers could actually be this good?

Erykah Badu ft. Lenny Kravitz : Back In The Day (Puff)
she doesn’t even have to say anything sexy, it’s all in the beat

Dwele : Truth
taking it back to high school on this song, which was on one of my very first mixtapes

Robert Glasper ft. King : Move Love
glad to hear Glasper keepin the vibes alive

Isley Brothers : Between The Sheets
I know you know it, but it still gets the job done right

Miguel : Sure Thing
one of the first songs I heard by Miguel, way before grammy’s and all that…

Goapele : Play
production on this whole album was future sex love sounds for sure

Ellie Goulding : High For This
nice and unexpected cover of The Weeknd

The Dream : Falsetto
genius hook

Kem : Love Calls
I remember hearing this way before Shazam existed and not knowing who it was for years, then finding it in my mom’s CD collection… gross

Ready For The World : Let Me Love You Down
the OG version.

Keith Sweat : Nobody
the song that actually inspired me to do this playlist.

D’Angelo : Untitled (How Does It Feel)
IT DOES NOT GET BETTER THAN THIS

La Yegros Remix

Real happy to share with you this latest remix of mine. It’s an official release for one of the biggest rising talents on the notorious ZZK record label out of Argentina. Her original rootsy cumbia (produced by King Coya) gets flipped with a heavy early 90′s dancehall riddim a la Shabba Ranks. If you dig it, please support by purchasing here. I’m currently scheming to do an original track with her as vocalist… so hopefully there will be another collabo down the road.

Beat Don’t Stop Until The Beat Don’t Stop…

Party starter, that is indeed my profession, and I’m staying super busy right now. Got a new jump-off going on this Wednesday at The Standard Hollywood with my homie DJ CATO who recently made the transplant move from Brooklyn. We also have a very special, very secret guest DJ who will be joining us (hint: he can’t list his name because he’s got an official grammy party gig on Friday- which I’m also a part of) and we’ll have live percussion from one of LA’s finest… This one is for the dancers, so if that’s you, then don’t snooze! If you can’t make it Weds, then please do come through to the massive Subsuelo+Mad Decent grammy bash on Friday where I’m doing a live remix set. AND, if you’ve been under a rock for the last 6 months, then perhaps you didn’t notice that the weekly Saturday night dance party I throw with Canyon Cody has quickly become one of the most raucous things the East Side of LA has to offer. Past 2 weeks in a row we’ve broken consecutive numbers at the club which used to be Little Temple- a legendary venue in my book long before I made the move out West. Not trying to toot my own horn here, just trying to help you have a good weekend, aiiight?!? And now for some tunes…

JJAMZ : Heartbeat (Chrome Wolves Remix)

Jamie Lidell : What A Shame

Mikky Ekko : Pull Me Down (Ryan Hemsworth Remix)

Justice : On’n'On (Ruined By Rick Rubin)

Aeroplane : We Can’t Fly (Oliver Remix) & Without Lies (Breakbot Remix)

Sinkane : Runnin’ & Jeeper Creeper

Chico Mann : Same Old Clown (Kon Remix)

Grizzly Bear : Gun-Shy (Lindstrøm Remix)

Booka Shade : Body Language / Interpretation

Lane 8 : Every Night

Even in the depths of winter, we’re warming things up with a large supply of certified heaters. Mostly all new and recent tracks, this month’s episode brings you more of the eclectic, funky, left-field sounds that you can always expect from MTR. Some of these joints have made their way onto the blog before, but a bunch of them will be new to you- featuring music from Cherub, Yellow Alex, Rhye, Chico Mann, Grizzly Bear, Tall Black Guy and more. Full tracklist and download available on the BrooklynRadio page.

Hard As F#%K!

Now I don’t normally do this, but uh, it’s Friday and hearing the insanely ballistic new collabo banger from Baauer & Just Blaze inspired me to pull out some of the heavy hitters I’ve been sitting on for a while now. Just when you thought you knew the limitations of crunk, somebody with an 808 and a keyboard comes along and gets even stupider with it. Truth be told, I can’t listen to too much of this stuff at a time, but the cream of the crop, in limited doses, does a body good. Also, next week I’ll be playing at the massive Subsuelo vs. Mad Decent Grammy jammy, so I gotta prepare for the hardest of bass heads. Stagedive from the balcony comes courtesy of Macklemore (not on today’s playlist, but props to him for going platinum no label!) and the photo was captured expertly by Lavid (before I jacked it from a FB stream). Without further ado, it’s headbang time.

Just Blaze & Baauer : Higher
TRAP TRAP TRAP

Baauer : Yaow!
THUMB PIANO TRAP

Wayne Marshall ft. Damian Marley, Aidonia, Bounty Killer, I Octane & Vybz Kartel : Go Hard
WHAAAT?!? Insane posse cut from dancehall’s finest

Clicks & Whistles : Can’t Believe & Relief
harder than bricks make you bounce type shiiiiit. More from these Cackalackians.

Purity Ring : Ungirthed
this still counts as HARD!

Big Boi : Lines (ft. A$AP Rocky & Phantogram) & Apple Of My Eye
I can’t say his whole new album is entirely listenable throughout, but I applaud the ambitious collection of hipster and hip hop collabos, and there’s a few songs like these that really do work for me.

Mike B. : Dreaming Out Loud ft. Breezy Lovejoy
underground Los Angeles rap that came into my inbox and I’m actually really feelin it. Check the rest of the album here.

Yuna : Live Your Life (Melo-X Remix)
Melo-X, Joey Bada$$, & CJ Fly : Live From East Flatbush
my dude Melo is staying super busy these days. The Yuna remix gets bananas DnB steez at the end, and this little freestyle session is one of the rawest, most Brooklyn songs I’ve heard in a minute

St. Lucia : Closer Than This (Xaphoon Jones Remix)
ok, so this one is definitely not hard, but I like how some of the same electronic sounds are mixing into this smoother style. More Xaphoon.
