So, I finally had all virgin/natural for the first time in 4 years (after cutting the last bits of ends of previously colored hair)...for 3 hours lol before I decided to bleach & dye a strip on the side of my hair...but still mostly natural, since I get my sides cut monthly. before (natural hair) & after It took 3 bleaching sessions, quickblue bleach, 30vol, (sessions of 30mins, 1 hour, 1 hour) to get a nice non yellow blonde. (for those who have been turquoise before like me, yellow is a nightmare if you want to get turquoise). I didn't use a toner cause it was 1am and I was too lazy haha I mixed colors to get different shades of blue so the ends are turquoise and the middle is a basic deep blue.
I kind of want to go back blonde but I think I should give my head and hair a break from the torture I've given it for the past years with all the chemicals from dye, bleach and perm and heat and products. :/
New year = New hair !! This is my first post in this thread. I used to look at everyone's hair dye to get some inspiration (all of you are awesome!!!!) and get my hair done. And last year (september 2012), i had the guts to really dye my hair (which is virgin dark brown, almost black!) to red/burgundy. So i went to the hairdresser and here is the result:
(it doesn't show much in the picture but the red was really bright! And it was really long lasting =_=. Even today, it's still showing a bit, eventhough i dyed my hair again!)
And for this new year, i decided to dye it brown on top and have orange ends, which is kind of a tie and dye... The hairdresser had to bleach my ends. And the red from my past hairdye is still showing a little... but here is the result:
^I would honestly go to a salon for that it's difficult to get the bleach even (especially on the back), especially for hair as long as yours is. you can use toner to even the bleach out, but when you dye it another colour, it tends to unbalance again ..
i'd give advice but I have no experience with bleaching my whole head so I won't try to offtrack you .. hahaha
I redyed my hair red ... again! for like the 6th time in less than 1 semester :( is there another way to preserve the redness? it looks soso pretty but it fades so quickly T___T.. i bought colour protection shampoo but it's not doing much either I heard about putting the dye in conditioner, but what kind of conditioner do i use? any non-dyed kind? how much do i put and how often to i wash with it (I normally never use conditioner)?

anyways i hear products with argan oil help protect hair colour and chemically treated hair. try using hair masks and conditioner with argan oil ^^

I heard that at times like those, don't use shampoo unless you absolutely feel like your hair is THE DIRTIEST. Don't shampoo each time you take a shower, because obviously your hair will be stripped of its color. Just wash with water if you feel like your scalp/hair can go on. (Also make sure that you're only shampooing your scalp... because some people shampoo all of their hair, which is improper) Btw how do you get by without conditioner?! My friend who doesn't use conditioner--her hair is split end central. It's crazy. Conditioner to me is essential... People only put conditioner with their hair dye because they either want to make themselves feel better since dying your hair = damaging hair, but if you add conditioner = not as damaged <_<, or lighten up the hair dye.
I belong only to you. You'll meet me once, but never the same way again. Live life with me, dream about me. But when your time ends, so will mine.

no need to be rude about it .. it's not like i don't use soap or something -__- but i actually have used things with argan oil and v___v maybe my hair just doesn't wanna grab the colour that strongly?

ughhhhghghgh T____T for now, I can do that cos it's winter break, but I go to school in the city where the air's really dirty, plus I run ~40 blocks (not for exercise, haha for errands) at least 2x a week :/ i already shampoo once every 2 days and bleh T_T
my hair's really short and I trim it every few weeks >: i also inherited my mom's oily hair so conditioner makes our hair really oil super quickly. I used to use conditioner (like shampoo one day, conditioner the next) but it made my hair worse
i was thinking about using that method maybe once a week (since no one else in my family uses conditioner, i don't need to worry about someone randomly having red hair) as a way to "redye" hair without having to do the whole process .. cos i like filling my school schedule as much as possible so i give myself very little primp time
when i dyed my hair, I used a hair straightener to add heat to preserve the colour more (cos it seemed blowdrying wasn't strong enough), so i'm hoping this time it'll last slightly longer .. >: >:
^ I'm sure just washing your hair with water won't be that bad ><. But I understand now about the conditioner thing :D I'm going to post some random tips from the internet X_X (Btw sorry about the random underlines, my Firefox likes to make things links and I have to unhyperlink them)
Tip No. 1: Always have your hair color applied to clean hair.
Yes, I know about the old wives tale that your color takes better on
dirty hair. Well it's actually not true. This concept is from back in
the days when the chemicals in hair color were much stronger so that the
build-up of natural hair oils helped protect the hair.
Red hair color is now much more refined and less damaging to your hair. The color penetrates better and last longer on clean hair.
Tip No. 2: Try Semi-Permanent Color by Wella Color Touch.
Wella's reds are out of this world. Not only do they have every shade
of red, the colors are shiny and sexy. My favorite shades by this brand
are 6/4, 7/43 and 8/40.
Tip No. 3: Avoid washing your hair 48 hours after getting your hair colored.
Red molecules are large, and aggravating the cuticle soon after
getting your hair colored with hot water and shampoo can release pigment
prematurely.
Tip No. 4: Do not do hair treatments the day you have your hair colored.
This can also allow red molecules to be released.
Tip No. 5: Wear caps when going to the tanning salon.
You need to protect your hair when you tan.
Tip No. 6: Wear hats or UV protection on your hair in the sun to prevent fading.
The sun can be damaging to hair, so protect hair when hanging out in the sun all day.
Tip No. 7: Get a clear or red cellophane gloss one week after having your hair colored.
Cellophanes are vegetable colors that are safer than henna and fade
gently without the residue. It is applied to the hair, then you are
placed under the dryer for 20 minutes. This seals the color and gives
your hair great shine.
Tip No. 7: Don't use harsh shampoos.
You spend a lot of money on your hair color. It is time to invest in a
good shampoo specially designed for color-treated hair. I recommend
using color support shampoos and conditioners by Bumble and Bumble.
Just make sure you consult with your hairstylist first to make sure you
are not using a copper red shampoo on a blue red color.
DIY:
Use ingredients from nature to enhance your hair color. Apply a 50/50
mixture of carrot and beet juice on damp hair. Let it sit for an hour
out in the sun.
Depositing shampoo: Once or twice a week, try a color depositing shampoo and conditioner to keep the vibrancy alive, like L'Oreal's ARTec Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoos ($17 each) and Conditioners ($19 each) in Cherry Bark, Orange Marigold, and Red Clover.
Tip 2:After colouring your hair red you should not enter a swimming pool
for up to two weeks because the negative effect of chlorinated water on
the colour is even stronger than the effect of tab water
Tip 4:Henna is a topic for redheads. Whether it is suitable for the care of
red hair depends on individual preferences. Chemist’s shops offer quite
a few Henna shampoos and rinses. Traces of plant extracts in Henna are considered beneficial and may make red hair shinier
Tip 5:As soon as the red hair fades between colour treatments you can use a
colour rinse in the matching shade. The rinse maintains the brilliance
of the red colour
Spring for Dry Shampoo
"Cleansing your hair on a daily basis can lead to premature
fading," says Hiserodt. "If your hair tends to get oily quickly and you
find yourself wanting to wash it every day, use a dry shampoo instead." This helps sop up oil and gives you a little extra time in between washes, she adds.
Conceal Your Roots
We all know that when our true color begins to grow back it
isn't pretty, so if it isn't time to hit up the salon or DIY at home
just yet (usually after six weeks), opt for a product that covers your
regrowth temporarily.
Try Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch Up Spray, $24, sephora.com. This
life-changing spray comes in shades from platinum blonde to red to
black and completely covers any signs that your current color isn't the
one you were born with.
I belong only to you. You'll meet me once, but never the same way again. Live life with me, dream about me. But when your time ends, so will mine.

You can use any conditioner, preferably a trusted brand for colour protection. They have a lot of conditioners specifically for red hair so you can try that. I dyed my hair teal and used a salon bought Paul Mitchell conditioner for color protection, and I noticed after every wash my hair would be a little more vibrant (I kept the conditioner on while I washed my body and washed it off with lukewarm/cool water). The lady at the salon told me my hair would last a month but the color was noticeable for almost 2 months with daily conditioning.
Ummm.. I used a lot of dye but it was because I wasn't sure how much to put in either. My conditioner turned teal though, just like my hair lol.
Also, do not use shampoo for the first few days and from then on try to use it as less as possible (or focus on the roots and that's it, put massive amounts of conditioner on hair).
You should try using toner to get rid of the orangey tones. There are also toning shampoos and conditioners like Shimmer Lights and Redken Perfect Platinum. However if you're trying to go blonde vs copper, it would be best to bleach your hair again.
^ Her hair seems a little too dark to use toner. Probably needs to do a light bleach with 20/30vol then tone and continue using purple shampoo/conditioners.
@nobody knows: I find that perm red dyes aren't as vibrant as semi-perm red, so I suggest going over with something from mp or sfx, some colours last a reaaaally long time too. When I was a red head, I'd dye with ultraviolet/purple dyes and let that fade to red and even that would last longer than just plain red dyes. The conditioner dye thing needs to be mixed semi-perm, it's what I do to keep my hair pink/purple/etc also and wash your hair with cold water!
Also for the oily hair, I literally 'trained' my hair to stop producing so much oil by not washing it for over a week (horrible I know, but I was on holidays). Before doing this, I'd need to wash it everyday with shampoo + conditioner to get it clean and now I can last at least 3 days without washing it and after that I need to use dry shampoo.

oh right! a friend told me about added purple in for it not to fade orangey ish.. but i forgot to this time >_< i got a different shade of red this time and it turned out way darker and purply than I wanted, so maybe it's good that I didn't add it. I'm hoping this shade of red will fade nicely, but we'rll see >:
I've actually done that too (ahhahaa ...) ! my hair's not oily now anymore, but if I suddenly use conditioner, it completely throws it offtrack and it gets oily faster. normally i shampoo every 2 days just because it's my routine and not necessarily cos it's dirty :/

I have a question for you guys! Okay, I have pretty pale skin (I'm white). If you guys ever use Covergirl makeup, I'm shade 001 or 002. I have red toned medium light brown hair. It looks nice, but I kinda want to go blonde. Do you guys think that really pale people can pull off blonde hair? I think Emma Stone, who has pale skin too, pulls it off nicely. My hair is in a pixie cut right now too, so I wanted to experiment with color since damage would be limited.
Hey everyone, so currently I have this kind of dark brown-ish hair color, (sorry for the super unflattering pic >_>, I couldn't find a better one. Also, I only dyed my hair to dark brown or red before.)
I'm thinking of dying it to this red color,
Since I know I will have to bleach my hair, should I go to a hair salon to bleach my hair because I never done it before? I'm pretty sure it will be expensive... but I'm just not sure if I should do it myself on the first time... Also, for people who dyed their hair to vibrant red, did u guys also dyed your eyebrows? I don't know if it's necessary or not lol.

I personally think you should get it done first at a salon despite cost. It'd be much more damaging trying to experiment with your hair with numerous packs of bleach since 1. dark hair requires a lot of bleach to turn light enough so that it won't look brassy or awkward when you apply the dye on and 2. at the salon you can just ask your stylist for how-to's and tips for at-home bleaching.
