KATHMANDU, AUG 15 -

The ruling coalition partners and fringe parties on Wednesday announced the formation of Federal Democratic Republican Alliance ( FDRA ) under the leadership of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal.

The formal announcement of the alliance of pro-federal forces was made at a programme organised in the Capital on Wednesday.

The FDRA includes over two dozen parties, including the ruling UCPN (M) , Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha , and other fringe parties who had been pushing for ethnicity based federalism.

Dahal said the FDRA was not formed only to fulfill the power-greed but has political significance as well. “It not only has the present political interests but is also tactical,” said Dahal.

Earlier on various dates, the parties had discussed the procedures and policy of the front. Chairman of Loktantrik Samajbadi Dal Prem Bahadur Singh, also a former minister, has been appointed FDRA spokesperson.

During the programme, Dahal expressed his hopes that the CPN-Maoist, which had split from the UCPN (M) , would also take participate in the front. “Agreement was not possible without a powerful front. The main aim of this formation is to forge political consensus,” said Dahal.

Dahal termed the demand for Prime Minster Baburam Bhattarai's resignation by Nepali Congress and CPN-UML as a ‘greed for chair’. “They do not come for consensus and keep on demanding the resignation. This is nothing more than greed for chair,” said Dahal.

He also maintained that the country would plunge into further crisis if the prime minister tenders his resignation at the present context.
