KATHMANDU, MAY 10 - Lawmakers representing the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM), Broader Madhesi Front (BMF), Janajati Caucus and Muslim community in the Legislature-Parliament have agreed to stand united in favour of single identity based federal set-up in the new constitution.

In a meeting held at Singha Durbar in the Capital on Thursday, the Madhesi and indigenous leaders concluded that the federal states should be demarcated along the ethnic lines. They called on the major political parties to resolve the contentious issues through voting in the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) meeting.

The leaders stressed on the need to carve out federal states based on single identity of a particular ethnic group. They have also decided to urge the political parties to call for a Constitutional Committee meeting for the same.

The leaders further claimed that the two proposals—14-state model and 11-state model—tabled by the State Reconstruction and Power Distribution Committee and State Restructuring Commission, respectively, should be the basis for demarcating the federal states.

Furthermore, the meeting decided to urge CA Chairman Subash Chandra Nembang to initiate the process for voting on the contentious issues at the earliest.

Moreover, condemning the recent criminal acts in Nawalparasi, Kilali and Kanchanpur—where a museum of the Tharus was also torched by protestors—the leaders urged all to work in unison for the welfare of the nation.

The major political parties are divided on whether the new federal set-up should uphold singular or multiple identities.
