HACKENSACK — The planned unveiling of another New Jersey monument to Asian women forced to provide sex to Japanese soldiers during World War II has been postponed.
The Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders says they are delaying a dedication ceremony originally planned for Saturday due to an “inaccuracy in the agreed upon wording” of the memorial’s plaque.
The planned Bergen County Comfort Women Memorial is to be installed near the main courthouse in the northern New Jersey town of Hackensack. Bergen County is home to a large number of Asian residents.
The comfort women issue remains a point of contention between Japanese and South Korean officials.
Japanese government officials have requested that another New Jersey memorial to comfort women, installed in front of the Palisades Park library in 2010, be removed.
