Wyckoff says "dis-alignment is caused by Colored or Irish".
Wyckoffは1883年、それをtype-barとは呼ばずtype-armと書いた。マシントラブルはたいがい 有色人種やアイルランド人のせいだ、って。 - 葉仮名raycy - KliologYCARE OF THE TYPE-WRITER.
W. O. WTCKOFF.
Our experience so far has been that actual dis-alignment is most frequently caused by the meddling of parties who know nothing about the machine, seeking to gratify curiosity in the absence of owners and operators. Colored men and Irishmen having charge of offices where the machine is kept, were never known to resist the temptation to try writing their names upon the machine.

TYPEWRITERS : Message: Wyckoff says "dis-order is caused by colored or Irish.".. Do you believe?:
I be & live 198 km off from Fukushima Daiichi. by airline distance..
123 Miles / 198 Km
Distance between Santa Cruz, CA and Merced, CA 123 Miles / 199 Km
.. a hundred miles and twenty three off.. Away enough from Fukushima Daiichi? or Near enough?
Some usages of "never" on APKY
The Truth of QWERTYAny pioneer who suggested that typists need not look at the keys was jeered as a faker.--Hisao Yamada
Hisao Yamada wrote not only for McGurrin but also for any other pioneer who suggested that typists need not look at the keys.
APKY centrates the target only to McGurrin.
Mr. Frank Edward McGurrin
He was never jeered as a faker, but gained respect and admiration for his skill (cf. F. E. McGurrin: "Typewriting without Looking at the Keyboard", The Cosmopolitan Shorthander, Vol.9, Nos.11&12 (December 1888), pp.249-250).
The Truth of QWERTY
McGurrin's comment for double keyboard machine in very just the article APKY referred that any double keyboard machine in those days including Caligraph2 didn't suit for touch method.
And later , Mrs. Barnes wrote it is possible to touchtype for Caligraph users..
Then, what would be happen?
In April, 1870, helped by Matthias Schwalbach, Sholes completed new Type-Writer with 38 keys, which consisted of capitals, numerals 2 to 9, hyphen, comma, period, and question mark.
According to typewritten letters and patents of Sholes, the keyboard consisted of four rows, nearly in alphabetical order, but U was next to O.
It puzzled us.
Current(1949) might suppose it should be from winter of 1870 to the spring of 1871, cause Schwalbach was to say so..
They write a new paper,"On the Prehistory of QWERTY."
http://kanji.zinbun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~yasuoka/publications/PreQWERTY.html
In the paper, they say,
Tracing the prehistory of QWERTY, we have investigated Type-Writers made in the 1870's.
We found several Sholes & Glidden Type-Writers at Milwaukee Public Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Nagoya Sangyo University, and other places.
Against Prof. Yamada[1] we realized that the typebar basket of
Sholes & Glidden Type-Writer (Fig. 11) did not mathematically correspond to the keyboard arrangement shown in Fig. 7.
Somewhat ad hoc.
For example, almost all numerals were located on every two typebars in the basket, but the numerals 3 and 4 were next to one another.
The Truth of QWERTYOn the Prehistory of QWERTY
Does your S&G have the same type-basket of professor reported?
Does your S&G have the basket of typebars for '3' and '4' are in adjacent ?
If not logical and ad hoc, then they find "ad hoc." and no reasoning is possible or somewhat try and error way..
If it is not common, their way of thinking loose the cause..

The Truth of QWERTY
Ya.
"merely" of Duncan James should be overstatement though.
APKY explains "QWERTYUIOP" sequence.
But Duncan James just say about the type of keyboard, the QWERTYUIOP keyboard, usualy sayed as the QWERTY keyboard.
