‘Confiscated cargo belongs to Syria, not Russia'

30 November 2012 / FARUK AKKAN, MOSCOW
Yuri Ushakov, foreign policy advisor to the Kremlin, has said cargo confiscated by Turkey after Ankara forced a Syrian plane en route to Damascus from Moscow in October to land in Ankara on suspicion of carrying military equipment belongs to Syria, not Russia.

Ushakov said the cargo issue could be on the agenda when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Turkey on Dec. 3.

“The situation could be discussed, but it is a complicated matter as the confiscated cargo belongs to Syria, not Russia,” the advisor said.

Ushakov noted that the recent fighting in Gaza and the Syrian conflict are likely items on Putin's agenda during his visit to İstanbul.

The advisor stated that Turkey and Russia have different positions with regard to the Syrian conflict. Ushakov argued Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan believes that most issues regarding the Syrian crisis are related to Russia.

He said Erdoğan and Putin have regular talks and exchange views on the Syrian conflict and that they last spoke on Nov. 16.

He underlined that Russia's position on the festering Syrian crisis remains the same and is unlikely to change.
