Firefox 4 bookmarking question
When bookmarking a website in FF4, I know to click on the star at the end of the address bar - but it always places the bookmark in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder. I don't like that. Aside from not being able to figure out how to sort them anyway, is there a way to set a different folder as the default one where they will be saved when I click on that star? Thanks.

I don't know how to change that folder, but if you click on the bookmarks toolbar icon menu, then Bookmark this Page you can choose where to put it.
To sort any folder right click on it from the bookmarks toolbar icon menu. and choose Sort by Name
Edit: Here's a shortcut to what I describe above.
From: Change the default location to save bookmarks | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help
"For me, installing add-ons which fix Firefox quirks isn't the way to go in this case.
There have to be better solutions. By experimenting a bit, I found two:
1. Right-click anywhere on the page and press M.
2. CTRL+D will also select Bookmarks Menu and since ALT+D is shortcut for 'Done', you can practice this and bookmark pages lightning-fast
Only left-clicking the star in the address bar results in your bookmark being placed straight in the Unsorted Bookmarks.
This behavior frustrates me as well. It doesn't do what I want and I can't customize it. Thus, I can only ignore the star completely for the purposes of saving bookmarks."

WOW!!! I've always been annoyed by that star. Now that I know what it's for, I'm even more annoyed by it. I always use the Bookmark menu so I can choose the folder for my bookmark. Otherwise I'd be searching a long list of what now amounts to a multitude of useless bookmarks.

When I use the bookmark menu, I only get a partial list of my bookmark folders. What's the deal with that? I have to put it in the general unsorted list of bookmarks and then drag it into a folder later.
And creating a new folder in the bookmarks file is a nightmare. Every time I want to do it, I have to google to find a guide to walk me through a totally non-intuitive process of about 5 or 6 steps.
The other annoying thing about Firefox bookmarks is the absence of a direct command to change the name of a bookmark. You need to right click it, choose Properties, and edit it there. Also non-intuitive.

Isn't it intuitive that "show all bookmarks" really means the old bookmark manager?
This is just another example of huuman engineering.... (or us getting old jtur)

You should be able to choose the Bookmark menu in your browser which give you the option to 'Bookmark this Page'. A pop up gives you a choice at...
> Folder: Bookmark Menu
Clicking on Bookmark Menu gives you an option to 'Choose...'
Click on 'Choose' will give you a new pop up window with the entire list of your folders. While in the 'Choose' pop up window there should be a button for 'New Folder'. Click that, enter a name for your new folder, click done...
...and you're done. Your bookmark should be found in that folder.
Or, something like that.

It's just that the star is a 1-step way to quickly add a bookmark, which makes it easier than the 4-step method of:
1.) clicking on the "Bookmarks" menu, then...
2.) selecting "Bookmark this page", followed by...
3.) the need to select which folder you want to place the bookmark in, and then finally...
4.) clicking "Done".
One might say it's a 5-step process in Firefox 4 because the menu bar is now hidden and you have to first click on the orange "Firefox" button in the top-left corner and then select "Bookmarks" - unless you opt to have the Menu bar showing all the time, which defeats the purpose in having a slimmed down browser. Even clicking on CTRL+D is still an added step, particularly when I like to do most of my browsing by simply using my mouse.
Has anyone explored around in "about :config" to see if there is a setting for it? (I suppose I could do that myself, but I'm lazy. LOL!)

In Firefox 3, you are defeated the minute you click on "bookmarks" if you want to make a new bookmarks folder. You have to click on "View" to start, not on "Bookmarks".
Making new folders
1. Click on the View menu, select Sidebar, and then select Bookmarks to open the Bookmarks sidebar.
2. Click on the folder inside which you want to make your new folder.
3. Right-click on the folder which will contain the new folder, then select New Folder....
4. In the New Folder window, type a name and (optionally) a description for the folder you want to create.

I'm lost....
I only get a partial list when I display my bookmarks, but pointing the cursor at the little inverted triangle at the bottom of the list scrolls to the remainder. Having to "put it in the general unsorted list of bookmarks and then drag it into a folder later" completely confuses me.
If you click on Bookmarks, right click on any folder in the drop down menu and ask for new folder. You get a dialog box to make a new one... Pretty simple. For a new top level folder right click the triangle at the top of the drop down menu.
I agree with the difficulty of a rename. What a stupid requirement.
Or am I completely missing the point? (Us older guys...)

I have mine at the right end of my menu bar and it doesn't add any bulk to the slimming down of the menu system.
I dug through about :config and didn't find a setting for the default. Seems an odd thing to force to me.
