Every commercial and industrial facility more than 4 or 5 years old is energy inefficient by definition, relative to the latest standards. Over time, as successive Facilities Managers, engineers and maintenance personnel make adjustments to control settings, electrical circuits, piping, duct work, air handlers, etc., equipment operation and efficiency changes. Uses within a facility can change, or new controls can be added, with the result that original design specifications and efficiencies are long gone. Finally, people change over time too and habits change. There are many options available for energy audits today and energy audits can be valuable but they are always just a point in time. Energy monitoring means ongoing information about your energy consumption including both short term causes for concern and long term negative trends.
