Hope you all had an awesome Fall Break! To help you ease back into the grind, we will be having our annual hot pot night this weekend!

As the days get shorter and colder, there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting around a boiling pot of food with all your friends. Come out to ASA’s annual Hot Pot Night for an evening of delicious food and frivolity as we engage in an age old Asian cuisine. There’s meat, veggies, and sauces abound in our largest event of the fall semester. Unfortunately, we have limited space so we’ll be taking the first 100 students to register and pay $5 at our table on the BC Plaza from 1-4 PM on Wednesday and Thursday, so make sure to reserve your spot ASAP!

Duke students, staff, and faculty have once again brought One Stop Early Voting (OSEV) stations to Duke for the upcoming November elections! OSEV sites enable and encourage YOU to vote early. You can register and vote all on the same day. ASA is proud to be sponsoring an OSEV day, Tuesday 10/23, as we want to encourage all the Asian Americans on campus to GET OUT THE VOTE during this Presidential election cycle.

We want to reach out and make sure every eligible student at Duke can exercise their civil duty. The passion and the energy of the performers at LNY are the qualities that make the event so special.  The majority of acts are independent groups and students without close ties to ASA, so every year, we are on the lookout for up and coming talent that can bring something new and exciting to the show.  If you or your group wants the chance to perform in front of a sold out crowd in Page, don’t hesitate to audition! FEMCAMP aims to build confidence and leadership skills, facilitate awareness, and help provide students tools for social justice activism. It will focus on personal development and methods of carrying out activism and will also include an opportunity to use the skills the participants have gained. There is no cost to participate and the retreat will be held at the Women’s Center on Nov. 2nd-3rd. The application window will be open until Oct. 24th and can be found here: http://bit.ly/OHKDKr.

Come join the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda and the members of the Singapore Students Association for our first food event of the year! We will be providing free Singaporean and Malaysian food from the Merlion Restaurant! We will also be giving an presentation on Singapore and Malaysian culture!

“How’d you do on the test? Oh, it must be because you’re Asian. Why are all your friends Asian? Oh, are you going to that Asian thing tonight?” These statements, and so many similar ones, color our Duke experience, forcing on some of us, a yellow mask. Come join us this Tuesday for a discussion about what it means to be Asian, and Asian American, at Duke. We’ll share funny stories, sad stories, and aggravating stories about our campus, all the while enjoying some delicious Bojangles.

Hi, my name is Rachel Whitney and I’m a junior at Duke with a minor in Theater Studies and major in Mechanical Engineering. This semester I’m starting an Asian American Theater Group on campus. I believe this group will be a great way to strengthen the Asian American student voice on campus. We will be looking to produce works written by Asian American students and professional Asian American playwrights. The works we produce will give a greater opportunity for Asian American students to be cast in roles for which they are not conventionally chosen. Attention to all cultural Asian performance groups! UNC-Chapel Hill’s Asian Student Association is currently looking for traditional Asian performance groups to participate in Journey Into Asia! Journey Into Asia is equivalent to Duke’s annual cultural show, Lunar New Year, and provides cultural groups the opportunity to show off their talents in front of a 400+ audience! We are hoping to get a variety of Asian countries to be represented in the show, so any cultural group, large or small, is encouraged to audition! Please send in performance videos to awatanab@live.unc.edu by no later than October 7th. The show will be held in Memorial Hall on the UNC Campus on November 17th.
