The science (although some practitioners consider Locksmithing more of an art) has two main focuses: the process of making, but also defeating all imaginable types and forms of locks. A lock is a mechanism that's used to secure doors, cabinets, rooms, buildings and other facilities used for storage. The most common way of opening a lock is with a key, and hence, keys are one of the main focuses of all locksmiths.
