Gangnam Style Youtube Marketing

Those who know me know that I spent 3 years living in South Korea. The money I made there was what I used as start up capital for my first business online. My tie to Korea is made even stronger because my wife is Korean. So when Psy’s Gangnam Style song took the world by force I felt a certain amount of Korean pride. The video has received over 300 million views and song is likely to become the #1 song in the world.
Youtube has brought a relatively obscure video that few non-Koreans would understand to an international spotlight.
Here are the elements was what makes this video a success and how you can do some Gangnam style Youtube marketing of your own.
1) Be fun: Psy has been well known in Korea for about 11 years and doesn’t take himself too serious. He is more about making great music and having fun, which really comes across in the video. To people in the west it might be best compared to a Weird Al Yankovic video.
2) Be professional: The video is very well produced. Though it is silly, it is also stylish and features some major talent.
3) Be sexy: If all else fails, have a few sexy looking women in your video. Many of k-pop groups are really just a group of hot girls with 1 or 2 actual vocal talents mixed into the group. Psy’s Gangnam Style video features many lovely Korean women and capitalizes on the same idea. I’m not sure if you heard this before but sex sells
4) Be a trend setter: The “horse dance” from the video created a simple dance that anyone can do..well maybe not Britney Spears (see Psy on Ellen as a reference). This quirky dance move also helped build the interest.
5) Be open to parody: The Psy Youtube video has seen thousands of parody videos which all help to make the original video all the more viral.
