Artist Olga Koumoundouros’ takeover of the abandoned property at 3411 Holyoke Drive in Glassell Park began as an act of desperation. She and her partner, who live across the street, were having trouble paying their mortgage and were trying to think of ways to avoid defaulting on their house. Their neighborhood, an old working-class settlement known for gang activity, was riddled with foreclosures, and they didn’t want their home to fall victim to the same fate. Koumoundouros considered squatting in the abandoned house and renting her own place out to tenants. Once inside the other house, however, Koumoundouros found herself entering into a thought-provoking relationship with the space, the belongings that had been left behind, the history of the tenants who had lived there, and the hot-button socioeconomic issues that surround the current foreclosure crisis. Panda Cosplay and Conservation
These costumes were worn by staff at a nature reserve in China to release two year old panda cub Tao Tao. They wear these disguises to prevent the cub becoming habituated to humans, and to convince him to socialize with other pandas. To complete the illusion, the panda outfits were smeared with panda urine and feces.
His mother was lured away using bamboo, and similarly moved. 18 months ago the pair were transferred to a large mountainous area to get used to living in their natural habitat, and more recently they pair were taken to a wilder, more remote region of the Wolong Nature Reserve where they can hopefully enjoy greater freedom and safety.

I did a variant cover for Boom Studios’ Adventure Time comic book, as reported on Comics Alliance. This is issue #12, due out in January sometime, I don’t know what you have to do to get hold of the variants. Maybe you have to buy a dozen copies of the regular cover or something? Beats me.

Spectrum of Time by Peter Erskine is a permanent rainbow sundial calendar installation. Hour and month lines painted on the walls and floor of the 40’ X 40’ X 40’ industrial museum space mark the hours, summer and winter solstices, and the spring and autumn equinoxes with astronomical accuracy. A 30’ X 30’ cross of solar spectrum light powered by the rotation and tilt of the earth tells the time and date. On cloudy days a laser pointer driven by a solar tracking program fills in for the rainbow.
