When is Wellbutrin Appropriate?

When is Wellbutrni appropriate to use? To know the answer to that question, one must first learn all about Wellbutrin and its intended and approved uses. Glaxo Wellcome Inc creates the drug, which has FDA or Food and Drug Administration approval for use as a way to treat major depressive disorder. Like many other drugs, Wellbutrin can be used to treat other conditions as well. The bupropion inside it allows it to be used as a way to treat seasonal affective disorder as well as be used as a way to quit smoking.

When is Wellbutrin Appropriate?

As stated, Wellbutrin is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a dopamine and norepinephrine focused drug. It blocks the reuptake process for those chemicals, allowing them to stay in the brain longer. Excess dopamine and norepinephrine is traditionally reabsorbed into the nerve cells in a process identified as “reuptake.” Wellbutrin stops that process, allowing nerve cells to communicate with each other easily.

This makes it different from many of the antidepressants available on the market. This is because other antidepressants approach the problem by blocking the serotonin reuptake process. Blocking the serotonin reuptake process tends to cause a large number of side effects. Wellbutrin avoids all of those problems entirely.

When is Wellbutrin appropriate for use? Wellbutrin is most often used to treat major depressive disorder, but it is also appropriate for use against seasonal affective disorder and ADD or attention-deficit disorder.

Wellbutrin, at the heart of it, simply wants to make sure that the brain has enough of the right chemicals to function, to drive the depression away. However, because it affects the body in such a meaningful matter, it comes with a number of extremely strict contraindications. For example, those who have problems with eating because of eating disorders cannot take the drug, nor can alcoholics or people who abuse alcohol. Doing so can lead straight into a seizure, something that nobody really wants.

Drugs such as Zyban use the same chemicals that Wellbutrin does, most notably bupropion. Using Wellbutrin with Zyban is a great way to get to a bad place – to an overdose. An overdose can quickly lead to a terrible seizure. Those going cold turkey from alcohol use may also find themselves suffering from a seizure if they are taking Wellbutrin during that time.

More medication that should not be combined with Wellbutrin includes Tegretol and Phenobarbital. These drugs must absolutely not be combined with Wellbutrin. They simply do not play well with each other and can also lead to devastating seizures.

Dosages for the drug can vary, depending on the age and condition of the patient. Most of the time, doctors will elect to start with a lower than average dose to allow the body to adjust to the drug. The dosage is increased steadily after three days until it hits the recommended amount. They will be prescribed either normal tablets or sustained release tablets. It is a most effective drug. Wellbutrin will be used by people suffering from depression for years and years.
