1月27日のログにC2の新型ブレードSmoothie2についてレポートしたが、C2のホームページに漸くSmoothie2の解説が掲載された。

以下C2サイトのSmoothie2解説の原文：

■The SMOOTHIE2 Mold：

The SMOOTHIE2 is our most recent blade mold. Made at the end of 2006, we call this the SMOOTHIE2, because it is based on the same ideas as the SMOOTHIE (1996 mold), but changes have been made that improve the handling in rough water on the recovery and depth control on the drive. Quantitative on-water testing has also indicated increased speed. Any of the blade designs that were previously cut from the SMOOTHIE mold are now being made from the new mold. These include the Fat SMOOTHIE Vortex (or Fat blade), the SMOOTHIE Vortex, and straight edged SMOOTHIE.

There are three features that characterize the SMOOTHIE:

No central ridge on the blade
The blade curvatures are not in line with the shaft. They are at an angle of 10 degrees from the shaft. This makes the blade curvature in line with the flow of water during the stroke.
A small curved feature along the top edge of the blade prevents the blade from going too deep and allows the main blade surface to be under-pitched to hold the water better.

Areas improved with the SMOOTHIE2 changes include:

A curvature change at the portion of the blade opposite the tip that facilitates quick entry at the catch.
The “top lip” feature that keeps the blade from going deep has been reduced so the level-seeking aspect of the blade is not as pronounced.
The cross section of the blade perpendicular to the shaft has been given a slight curve to improve handling on the recovery in the event the back of the blade touches the water.

Blades from the original SMOOTHIE mold are available on request.

■旧型Smoothieﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞに関する解説：

The SMOOTHIE blade went into production in 1997. This was a major departure from the Big Blade in terms of how the blade behaved in the water. Our intention was to create a blade that would catch the water quickly, then easily be buried to a preferred depth, but then not allow the rower to dig too deep and get caught at the finish. Although the SMOOTHIE has been widely accepted, there are some coaches and athletes who prefer to be able to bury the blade deeper during the drive than the SMOOTHIE allowed. The improvements made by the SMOOTHIE2 mold changes in late 2006 (see above) have made blades from the original SMOOTHIE mold available only by special request and for spares.

英語に堪能な向きは、上記のC2解説原文を読んだ方が正確ではあるが、英語を読むのは面倒という向きは、以下の解説要約版を参考にされたい。

旧型Smoothieﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞはドライブ中、水中におけるﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞの動き（翼理論での揚力改善）を勘案して1997年に開発された。併せて、①キャッチ時に素早くスムーズにﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞが水中にエントリーされること、②素早くエントリーされるとﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞが過度に水中に没しないこと（ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞが潜り過ぎないこと）という効果も狙った。
一方、コーチや漕手の中にはドライブ中にﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞをより深く入れることを好む向きもおり、ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞを深く入れることが出来ない旧型Smoothieは評価されなかった。そういう向きはBig Bladeの方が好まれ、Smoothieは使われなかった。
上記の旧型Smoothieの問題点を改善する目的で開発されたのが新しいSmoothie2で2006年年末から販売された。
Smoothie2の改善点は以下の点：①ラフコン対策：ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞ取り付け部を流線型とし、リカバリー時に水面を叩いたり、逆風に煽られた際の操作性を改善した。②ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞ深さのコントロール性を改善：ドライブ中に深いﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞを可能とする為、ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞ曲面の形状を改良した（ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞ上端の折れ曲がり部を弱めた）③ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞ下端形状を改善し、よりスムーズにエントリーできる様にした。
今回の改善により、Smoothie2を使うことでSmoothieより艇速が改善出来ることを実試験で確認。
C2では新型Smoothie2ﾌﾞﾚｰﾄﾞを積極的に売り込んでゆくが、旧型Smoothieを使っているクラブのスペア用としてリクエストがある場合は、旧型Smoothieも継続して製造・販売する。

1月からおやじのLBRCエイトクルーもこのSmoothie2を使っているが、上記の改善を実際に体感しており、非常に調子が良い。後はその性能を実際のレースで発揮するのみである。
