Experience the wonderful opportunity to live and work in Yokota Japan!  Support the Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) Program that provides early intervention, special education, and related services to children (birth thru age 21) of Department of Defense families who work overseas.

 

This position is as a Physical Therapist in connection with EDIS, at U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka located in mainland Japan. EDIS supports the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The purpose of this position is to provide early intervention and related services to disabled children and adolescents including their families, who are attending or eligible to attend Department of Defense Dependent Schools throughout mainland Japan.   The work involves participation on a multi/inter/transdisciplinary evaluation team, as well as providing consultation to other medical and clinical professionals within the area of expertise. Services primarily include work requiring the knowledge and application of concepts, principles, and practices of physical therapy to prevent disability, restore impaired functions, and teach adaptation to those who are permanently disabled. The primary function executed in this position is to provide physical therapy evaluation and treatment services to eligible children age's birth to 21 years old.

 A typical day in the life as a Physical Therapist!

 

·         Planning and Implementation of Physical Therapy Services:  For each child deemed eligible for services, provide relevant input for use in establishing family or educational goals. Formulate specific recommendations for Physical Therapy goals and objectives. Develop an Individualized Family Service Plan  or an Individualized Educational Plan for each child/family. Use specialized and advanced techniques required to intervene with the pediatric population. Analyze, direct, design, and implement appropriate intervention programs to meet the individual needs of the child and to enhance development and/or school performance. Provide consultation and training to parents, caregivers, other involved professionals, and classroom/specialized teachers.

 

·         Screening and Evaluation:  Direct and provide professional and clinical guidance and instruction for screening children and students, with ages ranging from birth to 21 years old, who have been identified as potentially needing rehabilitation services related to developmental delays and/or special educational needs. Using advanced clinical observation skills, diagnostic therapy, interviews, and/or standardized diagnostic tests, evaluate and analyze gross motor skills, reflex maturation, gait and ambulation, muscle strength, joint range of motion, self-care skills and activities of daily living skills, and neuromuscular functioning.

 

·         Consultation and Team Role:  Function as an equal member of an interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary team which considers the whole child and family when screening and determining the child’s need for services. Communicate with other healthcare providers, school personnel, and/or parents with appropriate information regarding the child’s development, any special needs conditions, and the intervention plans.

 

·         Administration and Documentation of Services:  Direct and/or perform all administrative tasks in accordance with federal mandates, Department of Defense  instructions, U.S. Navy regulations, instructions, and guidance, and locally developed policies and procedures.

 

·         Meetings:  Attend and participate in EDIS team meeting, transition meetings, Interagency Coordinating Council meetings, and related community agency meetings.

POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: This position has a Positive Education Requirement. BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  All applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

 

1 . Degree:  Applicants must have completed a degree that included or was supplemented by a physical therapy curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) at the time the curriculum was completed, and (2) the clinical affiliation requirements prescribed by the school.   Please make sure your resume indicates the type of degree received, the college/university that awarded your degree and the year.  If your resume does not reflect you possess, your resume will not be considered.  AND

 

2.  Active, current, unrestricted physical therapist license awarded by any state.   Please make sure your resume specifies the license number, state which awarded your license, and most recent date it was awarded.  If your resume does not reflect you possess, your resume will not be considered.

 

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION, YOUR RESUME MUST REFLECT THAT YOU MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

 

1. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have one or more years of progressively related experience.   Examples of experience includes experience as a licensed Physical Therapist providing physical therapy evaluation and intervention services to patient, birth to 21 years of age who have been identified as potentially needing rehabilitation services related to developmental delays and/or special educational needs, to include the performance of independent diagnostic assessment and evaluations of cases; assessment and treatment of patient conditions; and selecting, administering and interpreting diagnostic tests (i.e. musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, developmental disorders).  OR

 

2. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE :  Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.  Completion of three years of progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related.  OR

 

3. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   A combination of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements. 


FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide such evidence when applying.

SPECIAL POSITION CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Length of tour is 36 months.
  • Overtime/Shift/Weekend/Holiday Work is required.
  • Travel is required.
  • Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) is authorized - This covers most of the costs of housing, heat, electricity, trash, water, and sewer service. The DSSR maximum allowable rates depend on the location of the duty assignment, the grade of the employee, and how many dependents are living with the employee.   • Post Allowance is authorized - This is paid to compensate in part for the higher price of many goods and services in overseas areas. It's based on the employee's salary, work schedule, number of dependents, and the employee's duty station location.
