There was near tragedy at the 10000m Olympic Trials race in Eugene, OR on June 22, 2012 as a runner went down in an early lap and could have potentially caused more damage than it did. Natosha Rogers clipped her foot and went down, falling from lane two into lane one. This photo shows Rogers on the ground in the middle of the pack and the reactions of the other runners as they try to maintain their own balance and to avoid Rogers. Katie McGregor and Alissa McKaig try to hold their balance as Rogers had fallen in front of them; Kellyn Johnson barely misses tripping on Rogers and Alisha Williams must leap to avoid danger. Debra Maier is turned fully around to see what has happened, while other runners express their concern and horror in their facial expressions. Meahwhile, at the front, Amy Hastings and Shalane Flanagan appear blissfully ignorant of the mashup behind them. Safely out of danger and not in the picture is Lisa Uhl who had fallen behind due to a shoe mishap. Miraculously, Rogers was able to recover from her fall and finished second in the race steps ahead of Shalane Flanagan and behind only Amy Hastings
Top 3 at finish: Amy Hastings 31:58.36, Natosha Rogers 31:59.21, Shalane Flanagan 31:59.69. Despite finishing second, Natosha Rogers did not have the Olympic A-Standard and could not be added to the Olympic Team; Shalane Flanagan will run the Olympic Marathon and not take a spot on the 10000m squad; therefore Lisa Uhl (4th in 32:03.46) and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (7th in 32:17.06) together with Amy Hastings will make up the USA 10000m squad for the 2012 Olympic Games.
