Effective treatment for bipolar disorders

Bipolar disorders, also known as manic depressive disorders are without a doubt one of the most severe and serious psychological disorders that can affect an individual. Simply put, bipolar disorder is defined as a condition characterized by alternating periods of mania and depression – that is, periods of high energy alternated with periods of low mood.

Bipolar disorder can be quite difficult and expensive to treat. The most effective known treatment includes a combination of mood stabilizers, anti depressants and anti anxiety drugs. One of the most commonly prescribed drugs used for treatment of bipolar disorders is Lithium, or lithium carbonate. Lithium is considered to be non-addictive, at least when used according to the instructions, but it is toxic. This means that Lithium, if taken in large enough quantities, can lead to poisoning and even death. Lithium also tends to build up in the organism, so patients suffering from bipolar disorders who are prescribed Lithium as a part of their treatment must undergo regular blood tests to monitor the levels of the drug in their organism.

There are various drugs that can be used as a more or less effective, non toxic alternatives to Lithium. Over the years, bipolar disorders have been treated with  anti-convulsions like Clonazepram (Rivotril, Klonopin),  Carbamazepine (Tegretol), or Divalproex Sodium (Depakote). Klonopin has consistently proven itself to be the most effective and safest replacement for Lithium, at least when it comes to the treatment of bipolar disorders.

Although Klonopin is much safer than Lithium and other alternatives, you should still take certain precautions and use it with care. First of all, always make sure that your doctor is aware of your complete medical history. This is especially important if you have a history of liver or kidney disease, lung problems, issues breathing, glaucoma or allergies. Also, let your doctor know if you are currently taking any other drugs. Klonopin has been known to interact with narcotic pain medication, disulfram, cimetidine, as well as certain sedatives and some medication used for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders, like fluoxetine and nefazodone.  Klonopin can also interact with alcohol, so try to limit alcohol intake while taking this drug. When combined with alcohol, Klonopin can cause severe drowsiness, sleepiness and lack of coordination.

Klonopin has been used for a number of years, and it’s well tested and generally considered perfectly safe, even when used for prolonged periods of time. However, like most other drugs, Klonopin can have certain side effects. Some of the most common side effects of Klonopin include drowsiness, sleepiness, dizziness and disorientation, as well as muscle weakness, digestive problems, lack of appetite, weight loss or weight gain, moderate to severe headaches, dry mouth, mood swings and blurred vision. Some of the rarer side effects of Klonopin are muscle pain, excessive hair loss or hair growth, insomnia, double vision, involuntary eye movements, severe muscle weakness, hallucinations, difficulty speaking, rapid heartbeat, increased salivation, and severe muscle pain. If you experience any severe side effects while taking Klonopin, you should stop taking the medication and notify your doctor as soon as possible.
