The biggest mistake players make while playing poker online is limping into pots. By limping into a pot you are opening yourself up to being raised by a better player. Advanced players will prey on limpers and put them into awkward situations where they lose money. One of the most common scenarios at a poker table is when a beginner player limps and someone raises them. The limper then calls the raise and folds on the flop because they have nothing. Repeat this step over and over and it adds up to quick losses.
To compound this mistake, players like to limp in with garbage hands. These usually look pretty to the eye but have no real value in most situations. These hands include but are not limited to; suited hands such as K3 suited or Q5 suited. Other hands like 54 off suit and other connecting low cards will fall into this category as well. If your hand is not worth raising, it’s surely not worth limping into the pot.
On the other end of this spectrum is slow playing a big hand. For one it’s not that often when a player makes a strong hand such as a flush or set. You need to get as much value as possible whenever these hands are made. Far too often I see players check every street hoping their opponent will bet and they get nothing from these hands. They’ve missed out on a ton of value and even though they may have won the hand, they lost a good bit of profit by not betting. Sure, your opponent may have folded anyway, but in the long run they will call enough to make betting a must when you have a strong hand.
Another mistake that is less common but just as costly as the rest is not buying in for the full amount. Poker online lets you easily buy into the table with an amount of your desire. Beginner players will often only buy in for half or less than the full amount allowed. The reason this is a mistake is because you can only win the amount of money you have sitting in front of you. If you buy in for $50 when the maximum allowed is $100 you’re missing out on $50 when you go all in and win. Do this just 4 times and you’ve missed out on $200. It all adds up.
