The name of the city Bethel Park comes from Bethel (Hebrew: ????? ???), also written as Beth El or Beth-El, meaning “House of God” (in general), or “House of (the specific god named) El”, was a town in ancient Israel, about 10 miles north of Jerusalem. Its location is generally identified with the modern Palestinian village of Beitin in the West Bank; the biblical name has been applied to the adjacent Israeli settlement of Beit El. A second biblical Bethel, in the southern Judah, is mentioned in Joshua (8:17 and 12:16), and seems to be the same as Bethul or Bethuel, a city of the tribe of Simeon.

The high school in Bethel Park has around 2 thousand students in grades 9–12. It’s one of the biggest high schools in Pennsylvania and consists of 8 buildings on a 80-acre campus. Its curriculum includes ten Advanced Placement Program courses, 14 honors courses and four foreign language programs. The current principal is Dr. Zeb Jansante. Its mascot is the Black Hawk.

The BPHS is similar to a college as it’s originally intended to be part of the Community College of Allegheny County. It was built in 1959 and was extensively renovated in 1996. Bethel Park is located at  40°19?38?N, 80°2?15?W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 11.7 square miles (30 km²), all of it land. Its average elevation is 1,197 feet (365 m) above sea level. Bethel Park lies at the margin between the Pittsburgh Low Plateau and Waynesburg Hills Sections of the Allegheny Plateau physiographic province. The area is characterized as a maturely dissected region where the ephemeral minor tributaries converge into the tributaries of principal streams.

The highest point in Bethel Park is Rocky Ridge in the southwestern portion of the municipality, 1,370 feet (420 m), and the lowest point is at the intersection of the Piney Fork and Alsip Run creeks, 980 feet (300 m), in the southeast corner of the municipality.

Bethel Park is located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and has a population of 33,556.

The area that is now Bethel Park was originally settled around 1800 and was first established as Bethel Township, in 1866. Bethel Park was incorporated as a borough on March 17, 1949. Read the rest of this entry »
