VPN Software

Virtual private network (VPN) software allows private communication between computer networks over a wireless entity via a technology known as tunneling. The software applications include utility programs, clients and servers. Most VPN software can be downloaded at no cost, but there is a monthly fee required to run the program.

VPN software is typically user friendly and easy to set up and configure. Most software developers provide customer support in the event a problem or question arises and some developers also include video tutorials customers may access for help.

The VPN software does not supply the Internet connection, just the interface to the Internet. The actual connection is whatever internet service provider the customer uses. Most software works with most ISP’s whether it is dial up, cable, satellite or T-1 or T-2.  Most of the time the software is utilized by being downloaded to a computer, however, there are a few programs that are web based and work via the web rather than being downloaded.

The VPN software includes security features to keep the Internet connection private and secure. The software is almost like a firewall that protects everything behind it. VPN’s provide that same kind of protection with a built in security system.

VPN software also provides the mask that hides the computers real IP address and provides a temporary IP address for privacy purposes. The software also enables remote users to log onto the Internet through a remote network located at an Internet Café, library, airport, hotel or restaurant. The software also closes open and unsecured networks when connecting through a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Multiple computers can utilize one program license as long as multiple computers are not logged into the same VPN server. Windows XP users will find VPN software included within the Windows platform and allows the secure connection to the Windows servers.
