Obesity – Plague of the modern age

Obesity is a chronic disease that is characterized by increasing the body fat reserves. It can appear at any age, all races and genders and presents one of the biggest problems of modern day society. Some doctors even claim that obesity has risen to epidemic proportions in later years. In most developed countries, more than half of the population is suffering from being overweight. In normal adult individuals average weight and good BMI is considered between the values of 18.5 and 24.9. Anything over 25 is classified as overweight, and getting over 30 is considered obese. Three types of obesity exist, first level from 30 to 34.9, second one from 35 to 39.9 and third one from 40 and above.

According to the doctor, we consulted about how obesity appears he said there are several factors that can cause it and named some of them:

  • Increased intake of food, and eating a lot more than the body actually needs
  • Consuming hyper caloric food, this means mostly junk food, snacks and other food low in proteins and rich in simple carbs and fat
  • Bad eating habits like often and large meals, food that is hard to digest, eating fast, skipping meals and eating between meals
  • Bad life habits like low or complete lack of physical activities, sitting for most of the day, no recreation at all
  • Obesity caused by hormonal misbalance, although he noted this is a small percent of cases

Consequences of this modern disease are many and they are very dangerous. Chances of developing metabolic hormonal complications that can cause diabetes, increased fat in blood, increased blood pressure and growth hormone disorders. Cardiovascular system diseases like pectoral angina, cerebrovascular conditions, and arterial hypertension and thromboembolic complications. Digestive track disorders, like fatty liver and gallstone. Many skin conditions can also be caused by obesity. Lowered immunity is also noted in many cases. Many malign diseases that can be very serious even fatal including breast, prostate, colon, liver, and female reproductive organs. Many mechanical complications caused by the increased weight and its effect on the body’s skeletal structure. Many important psychosocial complications related to the change in lifestyle, persons looks and diseases that can be caused by obesity, manifesting as psychosocial stress, complications in the workplace like problems with attendance, less chance of finding a job, less pay and increased risk of injury.

How can obesity be treated? Well there is no single cure that will treat obesity you need to completely change your life style, to get informed and change all your habits.
