Two moderate earthquakes shake Nagano, Niigata Prefectures today

It’s another week in Japan, and that means another moderate earthquake. Except this time there were two today, giving those in Nagano and Niigata Prefectures a shake. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded the first, a magnitude 5 quake, at around 12:48 PM in Nagano Prefecture. The second, a magnitude 3.9, occurred in Niigata Prefecture at 1:33 PM local time. While these moderate quakes happening every week may be getting tiresome, they’re much better than one big one happening unexpectedly.

Nagano and Niigata Prefectures are both northwest of Tokyo, located along Japan’s western coast. In each case, there was no need for a tsunami warning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The Nagano trembler originated from a depth of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles), in the prefecture’s north. The second quake came from a depth of around 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), also originating from northern Nagano, and being felt in Niigata. Thankfully there have been no reports of damage or serious injuries.

There have been quakes measuring between 5 and 6.4 every week for the last three weeks or so, with a total of seven in just under a month and a half now. The most recent before today’s was only four days ago, on July 6th, a magnitude 5.1 just off the southern Izu Islands. Some observers believe these are still aftershocks tied to last year’s devastating magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami to hit northern Japan, but scientists are warning that the next big quake could strike the Nankai Trough, in southwestern Japan. If an earthquake as large as last year’s were to occur, there could be upwards of 400,000 lives lost.
