The generic name of Ambien is zolpidem tartrate and it is used in treating insomnia. It is one of the most effective drugs of its kind and the most reliable one as well. It falls into the group of medicines which is called sedatives or hypnotics. It has been approved by FDA (Food and Drug Agency) which makes it perfectly safe to use.
Ambien works in a way that it affects the chemicals in your brain which are probably imbalanced and thus cause insomnia or sleep problems. It helps restore their balance and bring you back your sleep. However, there are two types of Ambien. There is the so-called immediate-release Ambien which only helps you fall asleep, and there is the extended-release Ambien which has two layers. The first layer is quickly dissolved and absorbed by your body and it helps you fall asleep, whereas the second layer is slowly dissolved and it helps you stay asleep as well. Of course, the doctor will decide which of these two is best to treat your condition.
As for the dosages of Ambien, the immediate-release Ambien comes in two dosages – a 5mg dose and a 10mg dose and the pills are white and oblong. The extended-release Ambien comes in two dosages as well and these are a 6.25mg dose and a 12.5mg dose. These come in the form of pills as well, they are round and may be pink or blue. The usual dose is the 10mg one for the former and the 12.5mg for the latter. However, you should not start the treatment on your own, but first consult your doctor.
When it comes to the side-effects, Ambien can have some as well, like any other medication. Some of the serious ones may include allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, heavy breathing and hives. Apart from these, anxiety, depression, confusion, hallucinations, no fear of danger and problems with memory may occur. Although these are somewhat serious, they are not so common. As for those a bit more common, but also not so serious, they include drowsiness, dizziness, weariness, dry mouth, irritation of throat or nose, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, stuffy nose, headache or muscle pain. None of these can be detrimental to your health or harm you permanently. However, if you do experience any of these, make sure you inform your doctor about it for they might need to lower the dosage that you are already taking.
In a nutshell, Ambien is a very useful medication which can solve your problem with insomnia and help you get your sleep back. Since there are two types and different dosages that Ambien comes in, it is best that you first talk to your doctor and then start with the prescribed treatment. Of course, Ambien also has some side-effects, but these do not occur so often and they are not harmful to your health. With the proper usage there will be no problems at all and you will be able to get a nice, healthy sleep again.
