Blackjack, or 21, is the most widely played casino game in the world. We will assume that if you’re interested enough to be reading this article, you already know the value of each card. That’s part of the beginner, level 1 class, so welcome to the beginner, level 2 advanced clinic. Since it’s easier for our (at least my)mind’s eye to imagine sitting in a real casino with a real dealer, that’s where we will imagine ourselves. Since this experience is all in our mind , let’s travel to Las Vegas and sit down at a blackjack table at the beautiful Bellagio hotel, on the Las Vegas strip. As we circle around the dozen’s of tables looking for the right one to sit down at, we find a table with a dealer who looks just like Kate Upton, Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition covergirl. This seems like a good table to play at. Let’s try not to be too distracted.

Before you sit down, you need to ask yourself “How are my math skills? We’re not talking about algebra or trigonometry here. You don’t even have to be good at subtraction. The bottom line is, if you have to think for longer than a second to add eight and six, you have a few choices. Crack under the pressure of your fellow players waiting for you to count on your fingers(don’t do this above the table where everyone can see).Buy yourself some flash cards to practice your math skills, or find a less complex game. Slots might be a good choice.
Now that we’ve established the fact you’re smart enough to play at Kate’s table without embarrassing yourself, let’s pull out our bankroll and sit down. Here comes the cards. First all the players, and then the dealers card is revealed. Our basic rule of strategy is based upon this question “What is the dealer showing?” All of our strategy is based upon the odds of what card you’re likely to get if you take a “hit”, vs. what the dealer is likely to do. In most casinos, the dealer must hit anything less than 17. And don’t worry about what the other players are showing unless you’re counting cards. If you’re counting cards, you’re wasting your time reading this article. Back to our game. If the dealer is showing 2-6, we’re going to assume they going to be forced to take a card. Since over 30% of the cards have a value of ten, we will always assume they have a ten as their down card. If we have been dealt 12 to anything, we are not going to take a card. We’re going to let the odd’s work for us and watch the dealer bust.(hopefully). If the dealer is showing 7 or more, we’ll assume they are going to stay. Now we’re going to hit anything 16 or less. And no matter how many times you see the dealer draw a 9 when they have 12, that won’t happen for you! We will continue with our basic tutorial with strategy part 2.
