Hidden risks in smoking electronic cigarettes
Being a smoker who is trying to quit can turn into a real nightmare, especially when friends and acquaintances start showering you with advice on the best way to do it. We all have a friend who knows a friend who quit by switching to electronic cigarettes, and there will always be people ready to swear that these things are the best way to quit. What none of these people will tell you that electronic cigarettes aren’t all that harmless and safe, and like the real thing, they could pose a serious threat to your health. Let’s learn a bit more about the dangers of smoking electronic cigarettes and some of the things that manufacturers won’t tell you…
First of all, there is no way in telling how much nicotine exactly are you inhaling with each puff. There are electronic cigarettes made as 100% nicotine free, and there are alternative products that contain nicotine, ranging from low level to high level. Each electronic cigarettes package contains the number of milligrams of nicotine per liquid container, but some of the recent studies showed that these numbers aren’t all that correct. Scientists took random samples of various electronic cigarettes and tested the nicotine levels in them. They were surprised to find nicotine in cigarettes that were supposed to be completely nicotine free, and the levels varied to up to 4 times higher than noted on the package. This way you might be doing more harm to yourself by smoking electronic cigarettes instead of real ones. Those trying to quit might find it difficult due to the fact that they aren’t actually lowering their nicotine intake. Since most of these products aren’t approved or tested, there is no way of telling what exactly are you inhaling, and it’s a gamble with each product, no matter how high priced.
When it comes to potentially dangerous chemicals, electronic cigarettes are packed with them. Of course there are way more toxic chemicals in real cigarettes, but electronic cigarettes have enough hazardous compounds to make you think twice before using them as a more healthy alternative. Diethylene glycol is just one of the highly toxic substances found in electronic cigarettes, along with various chemicals linked to cancer.
Even though the story of electronic cigarettes exploding into a person’s face sounds like an urban legend, the recent 2012 case of a man in Florida who got severe face burns and teeth damage proves that these things do happen. All electronic cigarettes use batteries to power up the atomizer which turns the liquid into vapor by heating it up, and every battery is a potential little bomb. We’ve heard of cell phones and various other gadgets exploding during use, but the chances for this actually happening are pretty slim. In fact, we’re surrounded with so many things that contain batteries that it isn’t something you should be worrying about (unless you want to go crazy), but the risk is still there, although a very small one.
