Patch Available for the Growing Find and Replace Dialog

Patch Available for the Growing Find and Replace Dialog

  • Comments 48

One of our top reported Microsoft Connect issues since RTM has been that the Find and Replace dialog grows 16px on each use.  On repeated use, this can quickly take up your entire screen real estate.  We now have a patch available for this issue which you can download here.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to leave comments below.  If you’re experience problems with this patch, please file a Connect Bug, and we’ll investigate.

Thanks,

  • When I try to install I get the following message right away.  KB2268081 does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on you computer.

    Windows XP

    VS2010 Preimum

Clean boot with no other applications running..

  • After installing this patch (Win7 x64), one of our users got the following dialog when trying to load our solution:

    Silverlight Project

    ===================

Unable to open project 'MyProject'. An update to Microsoft Visual Studio is required to support the targeted version of Silverlight.

Download the Visual Studio update at:

    go.microsoft.com/fwlink

  • The link in the previous message was to download the Silverlight 4 Tools (which were already installed and working prior to this patch).

  • @Brian, can you attach the log files to help us debug the issue?

    1.  Open up Windows Explorer

    2.  Type %temp% into the address bar

    3.  Search for KB2268081

    4.  .ZIP up all the KB2268081*.html files and mail to westonh AT microsoft.com

@Mark, I'm following up with QA to try and repro this.  Can you let me know what happens when you reinstall the tools?

  • Thank you this bug was very annoying.  Any chance of getting this one fixed now?

  • Mark,

The directory - KB2268081_10.0.30319 is empty, even after re-running the patch and checking again it is still empty...

  • @Brian: The log files would be under C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\local\temp on Vista machines (substitute "Documents and Settings" on XP).  For an example, my log file was located at C:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\KB2268081_20100730_143346597.html.

The directory you mentioned should be empty.

  • @Rob:  According to some other Microsoft teams, the Silverlight Tools issue has cropped up for other patches as well.  The cause was using an older version of the tools.  Downloading the latest version should fix the issue.

  • Tried in multiple browsers, etc. I use connect frequently and generally don't have issues downloading files.

  • Download link not working here either. Tried in both Firefox and IE8. Tried using both the "Download single file" link and FTM in IE8.

  • I have been suffering a similar issue with the Find and Replace dialog growing massively (not just 16px) when using a dual monitor configuration.  It seemed like the left position of the window was restored on the left monitor, but the right side of the window was correctly restored where it was on the right monitor; resulting in the dialog being stretched across both monitors.

    Does hotfix resolve this issue?

  • @Alex: how about installing the patch and see for yourself? Not that hard, is it?

  • @RobIII there's no mention of any dual-monitor fix in the blog post above, so I thought it was a sensible question.

  • @Alex: It's also sensible to just download the frikkin' less than 5Mb file, agree to the license, click next and wait 15 seconds while it installes and then see if it works for you. If it doesn't: uninstall it. Rocket science.

But because I'm not really that big of an ass: I had the same problem with a dual _and_ a triple monitor setup and the patch has fixed my problems. No trouble installing whatsoever.
