Staff writer

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is distributing a poster highlighting its plan to purchase some of the Senkaku Islands in a bid to win public support, an official said.

The poster says in bold letters, "Now we are questioned about our courage to say that the Japanese islands are Japanese territory," with a picture of the three Senkaku islets sought by Gov. Shintaro Ishihara.

The uninhabited islets in the East China Sea are claimed by China and Taiwan. A Saitama businessman holds title to the islets the metropolitan government wants to buy and the central government has voiced a desire to nationalize the chain.

The metro government has printed 6,000 copies of the poster and began displaying them at its headquarters building Thursday.

The posters will be displayed at Toei subway stations and Tokyo public facilities.
