The Truth about the “Comfort Women”

After mailing out Newsletter No.39, I realized that one important point was missing
in my Essay and this is that the comfort women were mostly Japanese. Since I
explained that the “Comfort Women” houses were run by operators of prostitution,
I thought that it would have been taken for granted that the comfort women were
mostly Japanese. But I recognize that there are many people who still think that
the comfort women are all Korean. So, I’ll add some information concerning this point.

Professor Hata Ikuhiko concludes in his book “Senjyo no ianhu” (“Comfort Women of
the Battle Zone”) that roughly 40% were Japanese, 20% were Korean and 30% were of
other ethnicities recruited mainly from the local area. It is very reasonable
calculation since brothels were not an extraordinary things but commonplace?these
just happened to operate in battle zones outside of Japan.
