Less Hair Loss: Propecia and Other Hair Loss Treatments

Propecia is one of the most popular hair loss treatments in the market. It has been clinically proven to stop or prevent hair loss in men, and is one of two hair loss pills that that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This pill is usually taken under a doctor’s supervision, and if a person decides to stop taking it, he would most likely experience hair loss a year later. However, there are certain methods that can prevent people from going completely bald, and these are hair replacement methods. Two of the most well-know hair replacement methods are scalp reduction and hair transplants.

Like its name suggests, scalp reduction involves decreasing the skin on the scalp that is no longer able to support hair growth. The remaining skin is then stretched to cover the bald spots. This method can lessen about one-half of the bald area, and is usually done on the back and the top of the head, but not on the frontal hairline. Hair transplants (or hair grafting) are conducted by dermatological surgeons and is ideal for men who have male pattern baldness, women with genetic hair loss, and people with hair loss due to scalp injuries. Those who should avoid hair grafting are those that have keloid scars, women with advanced stages of hair loss, and people who lack the required “donor” sites.

Aside from propecia, scalp reduction, and hair transplants, there are electric pulse treatments, infra red treatments, and “special” hair loss shampoos that are said to help reduce or stop hair loss. However, these treatments have not yet been clinically proven to be safe or successful, so one might want to do some thorough background research on these treatments before signing up for them. Infra red treatment uses infra red light waves to restore the follicles and stimulate the tissue. This treatment is normally combined with special tonics that are massaged onto the scalp, dietary supplements, and skin preparations.

The second are electric pulse treatments, which repeatedly stimulate hair follicles at a certain frequency and intensity. This is done to revive the follicles to make them function properly again. Despite claims that this treatment works, one can observe that hardly any publicity has been made on the supposed success of this treatment. Another supposed hair loss treatment is ultra violet light treatment, which is similar to infra red treatment. High frequencies are used to help stimulate the scalp’s surface by massaging the cells in the scalp. This treatment is also said to improve blood circulation and soothe the nervous system in the scalp, among other things.

Clinics also sell their own brands of shampoos that they claim would help stop hair loss. People should ask for a sample of the shampoo before buying one; this is to test whether the shampoo really works. Scalp massagers, steamer treatments, and laser treatments are other hair loss treatments that seem to have uncertain results.

Instead of experimenting with these new hair loss treatments, do yourself a favor and stick to those treatments that have been proven to have no harmful effects, like hair replacement procedures or propecia.
