Stone Soup is embarking on a green rebuild
of 4 King Street after a major electrical fire in March 2009. The repairs will be significant, including the demolition and reconstruction of the rear wing, comprehensive energy retrofit weatherization work, electrical and heating system updates, a sprinkler system and wheelchair accessibility improvements.
We will not only rebuild a functional home for Stone Soup, but will increase its longevity and energy efficiency. Many volunteers will learn weatherization techniques throughout this project, and we will thoroughly document our approach with written and audio-visual materials, which will be made public on our website.
Since the fire, most of these grassroots organizations have remained connected through Stone Soup activities and dozens of people representing fourteen groups have already been involved in the design and major construction decisions.

We are planning a work day to do clean-up and begin rebuilding work at Stone Soup: Sunday, November 6th, 2011
9am-3pm
The building is cleaned out and ready for rebuilding! Yesterday we had a great clean up with a dozen volunteers cleaning, patching, painting, tarring, sorting, assembling lights and other things to be ready for the rebuilding work that will start within a few months.
***We need help from someone with electrical knowledge in finishing the temporary lighting assembly, please contact us if you know someone who can help***
Some highlights:
All rooms outside of the back wing that is heavily damaged are clean!
The flat part of the roof is re-tarred and the patch is holding up from the last work day’s job.
Handy carpenter skills made very solid blocked windows and garage patches.
We feasted on polenta, roots, pie, tea, cookies!
Stone Soup members hauled tons of fire-damaged stuff and filled another huge dumpster that will go to be sorted and mostly recycled.
8 year-old Rafi painted the base coat of paint on the sign that will show a message about where we’re at.
Over 500 people attended the King Street Block Party 2011!
Stone Soup announced that rebuilding of 4 King St will start soon thanks to the “Helping Hammers” Carpenters Union Apprenticeship Program signing on (pending signing off on final scope of work).
Fun and community togetherness was experienced by all, including many games and a water battle organized by The Woo, entertainment coordinated by Toxic Soil Busters / Worcester Roots Project, bike repair and pedal-powered smoothies and movies by Ciclovida / Flintstone Car / Earn-A-Bike. filled in with great music from DJ Juami, with the beautiful backdrops by Stone Soup Graphics.
Local talent included the ever-popular Little MJ, Maray – Kfingers & Miss Diva, Street Bangas, Conjunto Añejo, and rock bands at the second stage: Omerta, Friends of Foes, Snookie Got Decked.

How do we build the capacity as individuals and organizations in social movements to create multilingual spaces where everyone can have their voices heard?
How do we build our skills as interpreters?
What is the role of the interpreter in social justice work?
This workshop will provide practical tools for developing and improving simultaneous and consecutive interpretation skills, explore the social, political and ethical dimensions of language access and explore how we can include this work in social movements.
Roberto Tijerina is a nationally renowned trainer in multilingual justice and social justice interpretation. Mr. Tijerina was the Language Access Coordinator of the 2010 US Social Forum and former Director of the Multilingual Capacity Building program at the Highlander Research and Education Center.
$40 registration fee includes coffee/tea, lunch, and photocopied readings. Space is limited. Bilingual or multilingual competency is preferred. No experience necessary.
Over 30 people pitched in for a community work day at 4 King St on November 20th, 2010. One year and 8 months since the devastating fire, Stone Soup stays strong and is finally able to begin rebuilding. They begin with cleaning out debris from inside the basement and first two floors, as well as removing the stage, patching the sides of the porch and cleaning up the grounds.
The group left energized and even more steadfast about the decision to rebuild at 4 King St, as the clean-up revealed the structural strength and beautiful woodwork that remains in most of the building. The workday was also a great reminder of neighborhood connection Stone Soup has, as several neighbors came by to pitch in. One neighbor, Calvin Bradshaw, states “it’s so great to see the rebuilding getting ready to begin, it means a lot to the neighborhood.”
