Progression, an examination of a series, has been an uncovering of the old and an attachment of the new, learning to live de novo.
I have been involved in renovation of my house, for the past year, it has been a battle with chaos and control. Architectural drawings of interior and exterior revealed a simplicity and order that could be found among the riot of shapes, elements, textures, colors and engineering of an object in space, such as my house. With this order in mind, I drew a design simplifying and repeating some of the elements that represented these shapes in space. I was surprised as these elements were not new to me but basic line, circles, squares, rectangles, sometimes over lapping each other. I saw the relationship of these elements within the design, the over lapping giving a reference to an element being behind another. Within the repetition of circles is an examining for the emotional moving of the sun or a person moving thru their time, marked by where they were, simplified and just a part of the whole.
This process was used as a guideline in my series, as well as the thinking that continuing simplifying could bring more order. I wanted the colors to be non-chaotic as the interior designer paint swatches at the home improvement centers. I feel an emotional tie to colors found in nature, and in simplifying these, also for this series, colors bright and honest; deep green, bright yellow, pyro red, rich brown and white. I mixed them together for more tints and shades, as the mixing would unite them into families of color, related and harmonious.
The historic basic building plan is pillar and lintel, for making an interior livable space. My pillar form was inspired by the actual pillars in my renovated house, kept and repaired, except it is 2 times larger. This form is further simplification of the house structure; in this case it’s the lintel that holds up the gallery ceiling.
