The Mount Mini Olympics and Diamond Jubilee picnic lunch 29 June 2012

On 27th June the sun shone as we hosted our own Mini Olympic Games, lasting the whole day. The games started in style with a procession of the teams, the torch relay and the lighting of the flame. With so many families there to support their daughters and granddaughters the field was full of noise and excitement. All the girls participated wearing their Olympic team colour of red, green, blue, yellow or black. All girls from reception to Year 6 raced round the running track individually and in relay teams and competed in hurdles, javelin and high jump.

To top it all the whole school and the junior parents joined on the Headmistresses lawn for a delicious Diamond Jubilee picnic supplied by the catering staff, plus our own Jubilee cake that was enjoyed by all. In the crown competition girls, staff and parents paraded in their imaginative and colourful homemade creations.

All the hard work and organisation by Mrs Rafter and Mrs Allen was really appreciated and at the end of a memorable and happy day the results were 1st Yellow, 2nd Red, 3rd Green, 4th Black and 5th Blue.

‘We went round the track and waved our hands to Mum and Dad’ Riko Year 2

Smoothie Bike 29 June 2012
On 28th June the whole school enjoyed a smoothie. The girls chose from a selection of juices, frozen and fresh fruit, then cycled hard to liquidise their drink. The bike was extremely popular with the pupils and staff alike, especially as it was such a warm day. Even the reception girls were determined to have a turn at cycling, which was fantastic. Thanks to all the girls and staff who helped out on the day as things certainly got frantic!

Cycle Training 29 June 2012
In June there was much excitement around school as 16 year 4 and 5 girls undertook their Bikeability Level 1 and 2 training. The course was run over three days by Danny and Wayne from Cycle Experience. As preparation the girls had studied ‘Tales of the Road’ – an excellent highway code for children produced by the DfT. Day one started with a check of every girls bike including brakes, tyre pressure and seat height. They learnt some core cycling skills required for the road, then rode on the tennis courts whilst the instructors identified those who were safe and confident enough to come out onto the roads.

Subsequent sessions took the girls out onto local roads where they were taught skills to ride safely on quiet local roads, progressing during the course to slightly more challenging junctions. At the end there was an assessment ride giving the girls the opportunity to show what they have learnt.

All the girls were tired (Milespit Hill is steep!) but full of smiles when they came back from their sessions. It was a very valuable and enjoyable experience for them that we plan to repeat.

‘I loved this bike course and learnt so much and am looking forward to going on the roads with my mummy and showing her what I learnt.’ Ella

‘I couldn’t believe the three days went so fast, I want to do it again!’ You

The Mount School Join Brakes Guinness Record Walking Bus Attempt 23 June 2012

At 10am on Wednesday 20th June around 50 girl’s junior girls from The Mount School in Mill Hill left for an hour long walk in the local area. In an event was organised by the charity Brake, 100,000 children from around the country marched for road safety from their school gates in the annual Giant Walking Bus. This brilliant event is part of their ‘Kids Say Slow Down’ campaign and raises awareness of the dangers of traffic and how much fun it is to walk, and raises funds for Brake's services for road crash victims. Each girl from The Mount who joined in with the event donated £1 to the charity.

Kids of all ages from London to as far afield as Hebridian islands all take part in this giant march for a giant reason: to say no to speeding drivers, and yes to walking! The UK has one of the worst death rates in Europe of children killed on foot, most on their way to or from school. Half our kids are driven to school, increasing pollution and danger.

After a talk about the importance of road safety the girls headed off up Milespit Hill with staff, a Governor and three local Police Officers who kindly joined us to help supervise the girls on the roads. Along the way the girls held up their ‘Slow Down Around Schools’ banner as vehicles passed them. Everyone really enjoyed the walk on what was a beautiful sunny day.

‘It is always good to reinforce the road safety lessons learned in class, to raise money for such an important cause and have the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air and exercise while exploring the local area’ said Miss Stammers the School Travel Plan Co-ordinator who organised the popular event for the fifth year running.

Their long weekend was packed full of much more than collecting data.

They did an arduous and wet caving trip, a long hike and walked along the picturesque limestone pavement. Although they all agreed the trip was very worthwhile and enjoyable, the girls came back exhausted and absolutely covered in bruises.

We took four girls from each of years 3 to 6. There was a splendid opening ceremony followed by sprinting and long distance running raves plus javelin and shot put heats and a basketball competition. The event finished with an obligatory closing ceremony so that pupils really got the feel of what competing in such an event would be like.

Geography and Biology Trip to Woburn Safari Park 18 May 2012
The Year 8 trip to Woburn started with a very interesting talk on illegal trafficking of animals and the extensive use of animals for medicine. The girls were outraged at the way animals were being so badly treated and the brutal killing that was taking place. On the bus ride through the park they saw bears, wolves, lions, tigers, rhino, wilder beast, giraffe, monkeys and elephants. It was interesting to see a young wolf trying to play with one of the large brown bears. The pride of lions was feeding on a whole deer as one had unfortunately been killed in the deer park by a car earlier that day. Staff encourage this as it helps the animals to experience the feeding hierarchy that would exist in the wild. Following the obligatory trip to the gift shop we they finished off with a very entertaining and informative parrot show and of course the penguins were a big hit!

Swimming Gala 18 May 2012
This annual event was once again very enjoyable and well attended. The girls were so excited before they left for the gala and were pleased to see so many of their parents there to support them. As an added bonus the PE teachers were delighted to be running an event that was not weather dependent!

Dress Up Day for Year 11 11 May 2012
Year 11 had their last full day in school today before they start their GCSE exams. The school was filled with outfits from Alice and the Mad Hatter to combat wear – and a lot of noise! They tucked into pizza on the Headmistresses lawn while signing each other’s year books. The sun even came out for them. The staff want to thank them for all the cakes they brought in which entirely filled the staff room table. We all wish them the best in their exams.

Year 7 Trip to the Tower of London 11 May 2012
On the 8th May 2012 Year 7 went to the Tower of London for a day trip, after studying ‘The Disappearance of The Princes in the Tower’ for history.
There were statues of many wild animals made from wire including bears, monkeys and even an elephant, examples of animals that could be found at the Menagerie when it still existed. We brainstormed about Edward IV and the trouble after he died, to be greeted by ‘Richard III’ who came out to answer our questions. While eating lunch they met ‘James, Duke of Monmouth’ (Charles II oldest acknowledged son) who had a problem getting his tongue around our school motto, “To be, rather than seem to be”.

Year 5 trip to The Lincolnsfield Children’s Centre 04 May 2012
On a very wet Wednesday in April Year 5 went on a trip to The Lincolnsfield Children’s Centre where they experienced what it was like to be evacuated during World War 2. As well as seeing different types of air raid shelters, how washing was done and talking to Mr And Mrs Howard, who were children during the war the girls enjoyed a very bumpy and wet ride in an army jeep.

The librarian adjudicators worked against the clock to keep up with the marking and the results were announced soon after lunch. We didn’t quite win this time but our team’s literary knowledge was well tested and we had a very good day out.

ESOL Easter Party 04 May 2012
Easter wouldn’t be complete at the Mount School without the ESOL Easter Party – a well-attended annual event for our ESOL girls and their families. This year’s event began with an Easter egg hunt, organised by Miss. Ferson and assisted by the 6th formers.

The atmosphere for the High Tea in the dining room was buzzing. With ‘bring and share’ there a huge variety of food and plenty of it! The juniors paraded their Easter bonnets and the seniors and parents displayed their decorated Easter eggs. The party finished with the ever popular games in the gym. ‘Everyone looks forward to this fun annual event’, Miss. Ferson remarked.

War Child Talk 04 May 2012
On Thursday 26th April, a member from War Child came to speak to the year 10 about Kony 2012 and War Children.

They were told about the situation in Africa at the moment, about Joseph Kony and what he does. They were then shown a video about a child soldier called Juliet. The video portrayed her moving story; how she was abducted and forced to fight, how she luckily escaped and finally found her family. Lots of questions were asked throughout the talk and Year 10 came out with a much better understanding of Child Soldiers and how War Child is helping them rebuild their lives.

“It made me aware of how serious the circumstances are, and how tough it is for the children taken from their families.”
– Banita and Shannon, 10B.
Staff vs Pupils Netball Match 04 May 2012
This year’s match proved to be a real challenge for the teachers. Playing the talented, almost unbeaten Year 11 netball team was both challenging and exhausting. The game was a lot of fun, with only a minor amount of rule bending by certain members of staff – mentioning no names Mr McKay. Needless to say, even with the PE teachers on side, the pupils won but were good enough to end with ‘you were good Miss – well played’. Still working out who they were talking about.

Well deserved applause from parents, teachers and governors punctuated a very successful Spring Concert on the last evening of term. The Junior Choir performed first and delighted the audience not only with their singing but also with their happy smiles. The Middle School and Senior Choirs then put in some well rehearsed and most enjoyable performances later in the evening. Particularly impressive were the soloists who showed confidence and accomplishment, even those who were in front of an audience for the first time. The concert also included a Percussion Ensemble, a String Group and a Blues Group adding variety to a great event.

All the junior girls dressed as book characters on World Book Day itself, creating an excited atmosphere for a visit from well-known children’s book illustrator, writer and publisher Stuart Trotter.

He showed the girls all sorts of books he has published – board books, bath books and even a book that comes in its own dog kennel! He explained how a book can start as a sketch on folded paper and ends up as the glossy book in the bookshop display. After lunch Stuart talked to a group of GCSE art students about life as a professional illustrator and the more technical side of book publishing leaving those seriously considering a career in the publishing world with plenty to think about.

The Mount School e-book Project!

07 February 2012

We have the opportunity to produce a Mount School e-book which will be a showcase for our school and which we can use to raise funds for the school and local charities as well.

The book will be available via Amazon and via the school website as an e-book which can be read on any PC, laptop, Kindle or other e-reader, including smartphones, android and apple devices.

We thought it would be interesting to have a theme of FOOD, so that the e-book would contain Recipes, Poems, Short Stories and pictures and would include contributions from Pupils, Parents and Staff. This fits in with a number of our strategic foci as a school, including our Green ethos, our use of ICT and our Healthy Eating policies. It will teach pupils about the processes of compiling a book for publication as well as creating something which will be available over the WWW!

For further details of how you can contribute please follow the link below. Remember all contributions should be in by 31st March 2012, to Miss Hutchings or Miss McDonagh in the Front Office.

Many thanks, Mrs Belinda Hunt (Head of English)

On the 18th of January, Year 9 went on a trip to the Pitt Rivers Museum. During their visit they saw lots of different types of collections, like masks, swords and guns while walking through the dark adding to the tribal atmosphere. The girls thoroughly enjoyed it saying:
“The total atmosphere of the whole museum was incredible, showing the long history of collections from all around the world.” “If I could go back with more time, I would have explored more floors!”
Globe Theatre Trip

20 January 2012

Year 5 and 6 visited The Globe theatre on 12th January for a drama workshop on Midsummer Night’s Dream. They also toured the Globe and learnt some of the history.

Year 11 Drugs Talk 13 January 2012
Darren Gold from Drugs Alert came into school on Thursday 12th January to explain to Year 11 how drugs had affected his life and almost killed him. Darren went through his own experience of drug use at an early age leading to crime, addiction, hospital where he very nearly died to prison and finally to rehab. The story was harrowing and thought provoking. The girls learnt a lot about the realities of drugs. Darren finished on the reassuring note that seeing his 10 month old baby smile at him in the morning gave him more of a buzz than any drugs ever could – and he should know.

We would like to thank Darren and Drugs Alert for the talk.

Christmas Bazaar 15 December 2011
This years Bazaar was one of the best we have had. We saw old favourites like tin can alley, bottle tombola, face painting and of course Santa himself joined us!

There was some delicious food in the dining room from cakes, to a chocolate fountain, to healthy smoothies. There were lots of gifts to buy either second hand, new including lovely gifts from the Japanese parents. The Year 7 lucky dip was popular and sold out first. There were lots of other games and stalls to keep the girls and parents entertained, culminating in the raffle.

The MSPA raised over £2,000 from the event, all of which will go towards new equipment for the girls. Thank you to everyone who made donations helped out on the day and attended the event. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Livingstone and her team of parents who worked very hard to ensure this event was a great success.

Staff Leavers 15 December 2011
We were sorry to say goodbye to three of our teachers at the end of this term. Mrs. Hughes has been with us for 13 ½ years no less, and is giving up her role as Head of English to take up a more pastoral role as House Mistress of the Boarders at another school in North London. Miss Brown is leaving as part time head of Drama to take on a full time position, again as a Drama teacher. Miss Wiley is leaving us only for a short time to go on maternity leave as her baby is due in three weeks. Both staff and girls will miss them very much but we wish them all the best and hope they keep in touch.
Christmas Show – Hosanna Rock! Junior Concert 15 December 2011
The Christmas show was an absolute joy to watch as Year 0 to 3 sang their way through no less than 12 songs at the top of their voices. The show told the nativity story with narrators, Mary, Joseph, Wise Men, Inn keepers, Angels and animals. The girls remembered all their words and looked wonderful in their costumes. The huge smiles on their faces and on those of their parents meant the hard work had paid off. It was a very uplifting start to the last week of term before the Christmas holidays. Thank you to all the staff, especially Miss. Bausor, for their work on the show. Well done to all the girls who had worked so hard learning their lines, their songs and the choreography. Finally, thank you to the parents for supporting their daughters on the day.

Junior Concert 15 December 2011
The Junior Christmas Concert took place on Monday 12th December in the afternoon. The junior choir opened the concert, followed by the handbell ensemble, guitar ensemble and the string ensemble. Music included Walking in the Air and Jingle Bells, finishing with A Hundred Pipers. It was a very enjoyable event. Well done to all the girls who had worked so hard and to the parents for their support.
Carol Service 15 December 2011
The Carol Service on 14th December was a fitting end to the autumn term. Amongst the many traditional carols that gave us all the opportunity to sing up, we heard the choir perform some beautiful pieces including the Cornish ‘Sans Day Carol’, the Welsh ‘Suo Gan’, Howard Blake’s ‘Walking in the Air’ and the handbell ensemble delighted us with ‘Silver Bells.’ The bible readings told the Christmas story, with a reading from the Qur’an and a poem by John Betjeman. The whole school had the opportunity to join together for the service during the school day. The parents joined for the evening service held at the beautiful setting of St Mary at Finchley Church in the evening.
Sixth Form Christmas Outing 15 December 2011
On Friday 9 December, the Sixth Form went on an outing to central London to celebrate the approach of Christmas. The day began with ice-skating in the beautiful surroundings of Somerset House, where everybody, staff included, braved the ice rink in glorious sunshine. Despite a few totters and tumbles, no serious injuries were sustained and the group moved on to view the photography exhibitions inside.

Of particular interest were the stunning pictures of the Amazon rainforest and its indigenous people, by Sebastião Salgado and Per-Anders Pettersson. The stark black and white images of the Alto Xingu and Zo’é tribes brought home the fragility of their way of life, threatened by the destruction of their environment at the hands of farmers and industrial logging companies. These pictures of a dying culture were offset by aerial photographs illustrating the beauty of the forest and the devastating impact of deforestation, and we left the exhibition both awed and sombre.

A brief walk took us next to Covent Garden, where we enjoyed an Italian lunch before visiting some of the many shops in the area. The Christmas market provided the opportunity to source some last minute secret Santa gifts and seasonal confections, although we were a little disappointed by the contemporary multimedia Nativity installation! After reconvening for coffee and cakes, we made our separate ways home, tired but content.

Overall it was a fantastic day out and we would like to thank Mr Davies and Miss Perez for organising the trip.

History Trip to Ypres 15 December 2011
On Saturday 10th December, a group of students in Year 9 and 10 travelled by coach to Belgium to see trenches and cemeteries from the First World War. The visit centered on the town of Ypres, which saw three major battles between 1914 and 1918. The girls walked along a preserved section of trenches and ate an authentic trench meal of bully beef stew. They heard stories about wartime conditions from former soldiers and even had the chance to hold a rifle. Later they visited some cemeteries, both Commonwealth and German, and listened to a number of fascinating stories about some fallen soldiers. A highlight of the trip was witnessing a recreation of the famous 1914 Christmas truce where British and German soldiers suspended hostilities and came together in no man’s land on Christmas Day.

It was a memorable occasion and the girls had the chance to interview the soldiers about their experiences. Finally, the girls had the chance to explore Ypres town in the evening before listening to the moving last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. A number of girls laid a wreath on behalf of the school. The girls described their experience as ‘touching and memorable’, ‘beneficial’ and ‘a great experience’. It was certainly a very long day but one that the girls are unlikely ever to forget.

Year 3 and 4 Visit Neasden Temple

15 December 2011

On Thursday 8th December Year 3 and 4 went to the Hindu Temple in Neasden. It was a magnificent building with great pillars and towers. We learnt that the Mandir was built in three years.

There was a wonderful big shrine which was my favourite. We also liked carvings on columns and the ceiling, and loved all the wonderful colours. We saw a lady making a flower garland. We also saw an elephant with four arms. His name was Ganisha.
By Chiemi Year 3

At Neasden Temple first we took off our shoes and sat on a beautiful carpet with a Mandala on it. After that a lady showed us a special prayer room. Then she took us upstairs where we had to be quiet. There were statues of Indian gods in golden shrines. Lastly we went to an Aarti ceremony. We had a lot of fun.

Religious Studies Church Trip 15 December 2011
On Thursday the 1st of December, both Year 7 classes went on an RS trip to two different churches. We walked up the road to St Paul’s and down again to Mill Hill East church. Our first church was called St Paul’s Church of England and was founded by William Wilberforce. At this church we learnt about Holy Communion, which is celebrated by taking bread and wine. The bread and wine was part of the Last Supper that Jesus had before he was crucified. We also learnt about the background to the church, about the congregation and the vicar. We learnt quite a lot about St Paul’s church from Dr Worms who explained it all to us.

After having walked up to St Paul’s, we walked down to Mill Hill East church which was slightly different. Mill Hill East church was a very busy place during the week, because they have a café inside. This attracts people to the church. We then sat down to talk to the centre manager of the church. Somebody asked why there was a café inside a church and he answered that because not everyone was going to church, and having a café would bring people to the church, they would then try to persuade them to go to church on Sunday.

Both churches were very different, but there was something unique about them both. St Paul’s was a traditionally set out church with pews, an altar, and a font. However, Mill Hill East was more of a community church.

We all enjoyed the trip and say thank you to Mrs Smith and Mr Havardi for accompanying us.

Windsor Castle Trip 02 December 2011
Windsor Castle Trip (Homepage) Years 0 to 3 went to Windsor Castle on 24th November. They were learning about history and art. Year 2 were also covering ‘thank you’ letters in literacy, so decided that after the visit they would write a thank you letter the Queen. They were very excited and pleased when they received a reply. They felt it was nice of the Queen to thank them.

Year 9 Bowled Over! 02 December 2011
As a Christmas treat Year 9 travelled in the school minibus to Hollywood Bowl in North Finchley after school on Wednesday 7th December. The girls were accompanied by Ms. Lingwood, Mr. Ward, Mrs Hughes and Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones managed four strikes in a row! We think this was a sign of a misspent youth but Mr. Jones assured us it was all to do with the knee bend. It was a lot of fun and the girls all had a great time.
Staff Spellathon 02 December 2011
The staff spellathon was run on Tuesday lunchtime. Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Davies had prepared some extremely long and unusual words for the teachers to tackle. Mr. Broadhurst, working alone for Green house, won a place in the final by correctly spelling ‘hemidactylous’. His smile says it all. Mr. Havardi and Mrs. Perrot confidently won the final for the Yellow team with a score of 5 - 3.

Economics Year 13 students attend Tutor2U Conference 02 December 2011
Year 13 girls attended the conference held in Fulham on 29th November. They were really pleased with the areas covered by the five conference speakers. The conference focused on core topics and issues for students taking Unit 3 Economics. The emphasis is on business economics and market structures and covered business objectives, costs and pricing, contestable markets and economic welfare, the economics of concentrated markets (monopoly and oligopoly) and case studies in UK and European Union competition policies.
Science Club 09 December 2011
Mr. Ward has been running Dissection Club each Tuesday lunchtime this term. The club is for Year 10 as an extension to their Biology GCSE – part of their triple science GCSE. They have dissected rats and frogs, but this week it was crayfish. They certainly learnt a great deal in a short time by following the instruction sheets and identifying all the constituent parts. The magnifying glasses were a great help on this small creature.

Pride Mount 02 December 2011
Girls across the school joined together under the direction of Miss Brown in a fantastic production of Pride Mount. The musical was inspired by the popular musical The Lion King. The costumes were excellent and the set was stunning, with a beautiful sunset. The girls gave a wonderful performance on both Thursday and Saturday evening. Well done to everyone involved front and backstage. Please note that photos of the girls will be available to buy at the Christmas Bazaar.
Canterbury Tales 02 December 2011
On Thursday 24th November Year 5 and 6 visited the attraction ‘The Canterbury Tales, situated in the heart of Canterbury town. The girls listened to the tales on a headset whilst walking through rooms set in the time, with realistic waxwork models. Following this ‘Medieval Man’ ran a workshop teaching them about pilgrims plus the clothes, medicines and the foods of the time. The girls ended by having great fun trying on costumes and came back to school with lots of ideas for creative writing and oral work in English.
Spellathon 02 December 2011
Rounds of the Interhouse Spellathon had taken place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes putting the Blue and Red teams in the Year 7&8 final and the Blue and Green teams in the Year 9&10 final.

Year 7&8 did a splendid job of getting almost every spelling correct. The Blue team won 7-3. Year 9&10 worked really hard at some very tricky spellings. Mrs Hughes and Mr Davis were notoriously strict with the scoring too. The Green team won 3-1.

Christmas Cards 02 December 2011
As usual, the girls were given the opportunity to design their own Christmas cards that are available to purchase at www.my-fundraising-project.co.uk. The three designs shown here were chosen to be printed up for this year’s Mount School Christmas card to be sent out by Ms Cozens. Thank you to Momoko (Year 5), Robyn (Year 8) and Isabelle (Year 10) for your designs.

Year 6 Book Club 02 December 2011
The Year 6 Book Club meets in the Library on Friday lunchtimes led by the knowledgeable Mrs Ransley, our Librarian. This week they had been reading books by the British author Kate Marion. The girls had enjoyed the books so much they discussed writing to the author via her website to invite her into school. Mrs Ransley also talked to the girls about writing their own stories that could be shared by the group.
Drugs Talk 02 December 2011
Lisa Griffiths from ‘Drugsline’ gave a talk to Year 10 on Thursday 1st December. A drugs case was passed round for each girl to see. This led to a question and answer session. Lisa focused on cannabis as this is the drug young people are most commonly exposed to. She also discussed internet drugs (which are becoming more prevalent), ketamine, heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine. It proved to be a very informative talk, expelling myths and highlighting dangers.
Switch Off Fortnight 02 December 2011
We have been taking part in ‘Switch Off Fortnight’. This event encourages us to focus on energy efficiency in school. We started last Monday with an assembly by Year 5 introducing the idea and since then members of the Green Club have been patrolling the school to see which classrooms have their lights left on when the room is empty. We completed an audit at the beginning of the fortnight and we hope that we see an improvement when the fortnight is over. We will be continuing to award certificates through the Year to the forms and offices that are the best at conserving energy. Well done to 9M who were the best class in the Senior school in the first week of our campaign.
Talk about Law 25 November 2011
Liv Harris, a Barrister, gave an extremely amusing and interesting talk to Year 11 on Friday 25th November. She discussed the workings of criminal courts, crown courts and magistrates courts and provided career advice for those who wanted to go into law.
Children in Need 18 November 2011
On Friday 18th November girls and staff dressed in spots and paid £1 to support Children in Need. There were lots of other fundraising events going on throughout the day, all organised by the girls themselves. Year 6 kicked the day off with a break time cake sale. Lunchtime was busy affair with both Year 7 and Year 9 face painting, Year 6 nail painting, Year 7 running a tombola and Year 11 with their popular ‘Sponge the Teacher’ game on the tennis courts!

Girls in Years 10 and 11 had a talk from Credit Action on Thursday lunchtime. They covered a range of areas including the extensive range of financial products and services on offer; how and why you need to budget; the importance of setting goals for life; taking risks and charitable giving; and developing responsible attitudes to money. Hafsah Year 11 said, ‘I found the talk interesting and useful. It made me think about different things I would do with any money I had.’

Tree Planting trip 18 November 2011
Girls from Year 5 to 10 went to Hertswood Wood in Sandridge on Thursday 17th November to take part, for the second year running, in a ‘Woodland Trust’ event for schools. The Mount School joined other schools in planting 910 trees. The aim is to provide a natural habitat corridor for wildlife to move through the forest. The girls had great fun planting Oak, Hawthorne, Hornbeam, Lime and Silver Birch trees.

Police Powers talk Y8 18 November 2011
Year 8 had a talk by PC Fairclough about their rights. The talk also covered the implications of shoplifting, the process of police powers up to criminal records for under 16’s, drug dealing and supplying and personal safety as a pedestrian. The girls had plenty to say in the question and answer session and found the talk very informative.
Music Concert 18 November 2011
Around 30 girls took part in a lunchtime concert on Wednesday 16 November in the Gym. They were well prepared for the day and played a range of music from 60s rhythm and blues to folk songs, via a range of classical masterpieces. The Middle School Choir and String Orchestra took part, along with solo performers from Year 6 to Year 10 and some Year 8 girls, who performed their own arrangement of the classic song Stand by Me.

Thanks go to Mrs Emanuel for preparing the orchestra and the girls for taking part. The performances were appreciated by an enthusiastic audience.

Year 11 enjoyed a change of scene at the Richmond Theatre on Wednesday to see An Inspector Calls by JB Priestley. The play is set for GCSE and the year group were polishing their ideas before writing a coursework essay.

The play raised some interesting talking points about the characterisation but it was generally agreed that the set was astonishing.
Duke of Edinburgh Information Evening 18 November 2011
Girls are currently signing up for the Bronze and Silver D of E Award. They attended an evening to inform them about what they need to do to achieve this on Tuesday 8th November. The sections are volunteering, developing a skill, a sport and an expedition. Many of the girls already take part in activities which will count towards this valuable award. Miss Dawson, who is responsible for D of E at the school said, 'I look forward to helping them achieve this over the coming year.'

We would be very grateful of any new items you could donate for the Christmas Bazaar tombola. Please bring any donations into school as soon as possible.

Clear out those unwanted gifts and help raise money for your school!
Remembrance Day 11.11.11 11 November 2011
The whole school joined together for an assembly to remember the men and women who have lost their lives or been injured in World War I and the many wars that have happened since. We started with a piece of music written by Benjamin Britten called The War Requiem. This piece was commissioned for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral on 30 May 1962 after the original fourteenth century structure was destroyed in a World War II bombing raid in 1940.

Ms Cozens talked about how we all remember the 5th November, with its catchy rhyme and noisy fireworks. In contrast we also remember 11th November, with many moving poems and pieces of music but we remember in silence. This silence giving us time to pause in our day, to reflect on what has happened in the past and what our own and others actions may be in the future.

The girls sang a moving, contemporary song ‘No wars will stop us singing’ that was sung by thousands of young people on World Peace Day. Ms Cozens followed this with a poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon, which includes the well loved verse

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Following the 2 minute silence and last post, the assembly ended with music by John Adams, written to remember those who died in the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers.
The Mayor of Barnet's Charity Walk 11 November 2011
We were very pleased to welcome The Mayor of Barnet to our school in September 2011 for Prize Giving. On Sunday 20th November 2011 a Charity Walk has been organised to raise funds for the Mayor of Barnet Charity Appeal 2011-2012 and they would very much like Mount School students to participate in this.

The walk will raise money for good causes and also provide the participants who complete the walk with a signed Certificate from the Mayor, which students can include in their Record of Achievement, refer to in the CV and talk about in interviews. Participants who finish the walk will also enjoy a free lunch at McDonalds.

All students, parents and staff are welcome to participate. If you do, please let us know, take photos and forward to Helen Stammers at manacc@mountschool.com.

Marcus Sedgwick chills The Mount School with his stories 04 November 2011
There was an excited buzz mixed with nervous laughter on Thursday lunchtime as girls from year 7 to 10 and staff gathered to hear from the acclaimed children’s author Marcus Sedgwick. Those who had read his dark thrillers knew they were in for an intriguing and shocking talk. They were right!

Marcus displayed a number of pictures which the girls could choose from. Each was a clue to the inspiration behind one of his books. The first choice, an egg, led him to describe his book, ‘Revolver’, about a boy, Sig, who lives north of the Arctic Circle.Another book described was ‘My Swordhand is Singing’. This story was inspired by two entirely different sources: one a 300 year old folk tale and the other, the first Star Wars film. The story is about a boy Peter and his friend Agnes. Agnes has to spend 40 days and 40 nights in complete isolation as part of local ceremony.

With the whole hall enthralled by his fascinating tales, he left avid readers delighted with the news he was three weeks into writing his next story. We can’t wait!

Thank you to Marcus Sedgwick for his visit and to Mrs. Ransley for organising the event and the very popular book signing.

MSPA Event with Speaker Debra Potel 04 November 2011
On Tuesday 2nd November, parents and staff gathered to hear from Debra Potel. The role of a clinical psychologist was explained along with the complication that similar symptoms can often have very different root causes. Debra has 20 years experience in helping children, young people, parents and families. Her expertise covers the full range of developmental, emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties.

Having identified the most pressing issues of those attending the evening, Debra talked us through each of them. Sibling rivalry was high on the agenda. Debra explained how this was based on who has ‘more of Mum’ or the main carer. Also that children need something very concrete to believe 100% that they are loved. They will more readily look for evidence that the parent / carer is favouring another child than look for evidence of how much they are loved. Debra explained how valuable just 10 minutes each day of one to one time can be.

The issues of friendships and communication were explored as were new methods of communicating via Facebook, BBM, Skype etc. Debra also talked about the many pressures on young people these days. We ended with the wise words that ‘It’s ok to struggle’ as if they can ‘face difficulty this makes achievement all the more exciting’.

Thank you to Debra for such a useful and thought provoking evening; to the MSPA for arranging this event which provided a very valuable opportunity to learn about and explore these issues; and to all those who attended for their support on a very wet and windy night!

MSPA Meeting
The MSPA would be pleased if you would attend their meeting regarding the Christmas Bazaar on Monday 7th November, in Room 5 at 3.45pm.

Congratulations to all the winning teams and well done to everyone who participated. All the results will be on the House notice boards.

Kitchen staff cooked up a truly terrifying lunch 04 November 2011
On 31st October Kitchen staff really got into the spirit of Halloween giving the dining room a spooky atmosphere with a haunted tree, witches broom, pumpkins and haunting music. The girls loved it!
Junior Girls Stay Safe in the Dark 04 November 2011
With the clocks going back last weekend we have all noticed it getting darker. Our two Junior Road Safety Officers, Aneesha and Feeza, gave a talk to all pupils in the junior school about the importance of being seen in the dark.

They advised their peers that the best think to do was to ‘wear something reflective’. Every girl was then given a reflective sticker or tag to put on their school.

The girls said, ‘these special reflective badges mean that we can be seen when car headlights are shining towards us. Even a small patch of reflective material can help drivers to see us from very far away.'

Lets all stay safe and BE SEEN IN THE DARK!
Year 11 up against an interview panel 18 October 2011
Thursday 13th October was a very exciting day for the Year 11; after handing in their CVs and letter of application for a fictitious job at John Lewis the girls arrived at school ready to be interviewed. They certainly dressed for the part, looking very elegant and sophisticated in their interview outfits. Eight volunteers from business accompanied by Lisa from Barnet Education Partnership came into school during the afternoon and put the girls through their paces as they were interviewed in groups of four. Each group then had peer feedback and written feedback and by the end of the day, one young lady from each group was offered the fictitious job. The students said it was an amazingly worthwhile experience and they certainly learnt a lot, coming away with new skills that they will be able to use when being interviewed for sixth form places. The business volunteers were extremely impressed by our Year 11, saying how polite and articulate the students were and how they thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon at The Mount.

Mr Klidzia's Lunchtime Concert 14 October 2011
Friday lunchtime was a real treat for girls and staff who attended the wonderful concert by Mr Klidzia (Head of Psychology) on the violin, Yuki Osedo (guest) on piano and Jill Anderson (guest) on clarinet. They played four very contrasting pieces, starting with Tchaikovsky's Melodie op. 42, followed by an incredible piece called Andante con dolore by Khachaturian, first performed in 1933 in Moscow. The third piece by Faure was named Berceuse op.16 , first performed in 1880 with the composer himself playing the piano accompaniment. Lastly the very moving Suite in 4 movements op. 157b by Milhaud, reworked for a film Voyageur sans bagages about an amnesiac World War 1 soldier. Thank you to all three musicians for putting on such an enjoyable concert.

Classics Trip to Cambridge 14 October 2011
On Wednesday 12th October, girls studying Classics spent the day in Cambridge. In the morning they explored a museum packed full of of classical sculptures although their visit focused on Greek art. The afternoon was great fun as they took four punts, each with its own local guide, and spent the afternoon punting down the river. The guides not only pointed out each of the colleges as they passed them but also gave each girls a practical lesson in punting. We are glad to report no-one fell in.

Year 7 Adventures at Hilltop 14 October 2011
Year 7 went on their annual trip to Hilltop on 9th October for 4 days. This trip provides a perfect opportunity for Year 7 to get to know everyone in the year and have a lot of fun carrying out the group bonding activities. The all important weather was dry and windy so they could take part in everything on offer. These included archery, a high climbing wall and the old favourite, the 'Big Zipper'. The photos were certainly full of smiling faces.

Study Skills give our girls a head start 14 October 2011
On Tuesday 11th October all Year 10 and 11 spent time with the inspiring Sarah from ‘Learning Performance’. The purpose of the day was for the girls to learn study skills and memory techniques to help them through their all important GCSE years.

Sarah explained the importance of working smarter rather than harder as it not just the amount of time spent studying but the approach taken that helps students retain information. Sarah also teaches students the very valuable technique of condensing information so that whole pieces of text can be learnt quickly and easily. This particular skill is tested at the end of the session and girls are amazed at how much they can remember in such a short time.

Stress can be a problem in high achieving schools such as The Mount. Learning how to learn effectively really helps reduce stress levels. Sarah teaches the girls how to be fully engaged when learning, then how to fully switch off and have a proper short break. Breaks are a very important element of studying and in reducing stress.

The girls all take home a useful study skills book but can also contact Learning Performance via e-mail or their website if they have further questions.

Big Draw 07 October 2011

Launched as a one-day event in 2000, The Big Draw is now an annual month-long festival of over one thousand events across the UK. Every October, museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries, schools and parks join in – inviting people of all ages to discover how drawing can connect them with their surroundings and the wider community. See www.thebigdraw.org for more information.

Last year The Mount School held a Big Draw event involving the whole school painting murals on a school wall. This year, on Friday October 7th, Mrs Mitchell and Miss Sweeney organised a day of creating mosaics, again involving the whole school. The results were fabulous. The seniors produced a wonderful mosaic of our school logo, the chamois goat plus a wonderful tree bearing fruits containing the symbols of different religions. The juniors had enormous fun creating an elephant, butterfly, flower and horse. ESOL created a mosaic of their own, which was a snake – a symbol of knowledge.

STP Accreditation Event 07 October 2011

Aneesha and Feeza from Year 6 joined Miss Stammers for the School Travel Plan Accreditation Event held at The Bishopsgate Institute in central London on 6th October. The school had been awarded the Higher Standards Award for its Travel plan for the second year running so was invited to the day, which involved lots of games, talks and brainstorming about travel plan issues plus talks from schools from Germany and Bulgaria who are achieving amazing results in reducing their carbon emissions. The day finished with an award ceremony where the girls were presented with the Higher Standards certificate awarded by TfL.

Prize Giving September 2011 23 September 2011

Our third Prize Giving event was once again a wonderful event enjoyed by the girls and the proud parents, family, staff and governors. The Head Teacher, Ms. Cozens welcomed everyone and was pleased to be able to call the event a tradition at last!

The junior event was all the more entertaining thanks to our speaker Mr Sumray, our former Head of Art and a very talented artist. At the evening event we were pleased to welcome former student Michelle Leicester who spoke of how The Mount gave her the confidence to pursue a high flying career in marketing, starting at Saatchi and Saatchi, then after many years becoming an artist and designer. We were also delighted that The Worshipful the Mayor Councillor Lisa Rutter of the London Borough of Barnet attended the event and spoke about how inspired she had been by the achievements of the girls.

The choir, Helen and Verity all entertained us beautifully with their musical numbers. Four Year 10 girls and Head Girl Naho gave us a very interesting insight into the year that had passed. The Head Girl and Deputy Head Girls presented the Year 13 graduates with their scrolls and roses themselves and had some wonderful things to say about every one of those who are heading off to University.

Many congratulations to each and every girl who won a prize. We were delighted to have awarded them to such worthy winners who have all worked so hard or shown such dedication over the last year. Keep up the good work!

We are delighted that the new shower block has been completed over the summer holiday ready for the new school year. It contains five showers, one of which is specially adapted for disabled use. The adjoining toilet block has also been completely refurbished. The girls feedback has been extremely positive, with many commenting on the ‘lovely new showers’.

The Festival of Quilts 2011 16 September 2011

Both juniors and seniors worked hard on some very creative and beautifully made quilts to enter the Festival of Quilts competition held at the NEC on 11th to 14th August 2011. We were delighted that the junior quilt, which was created by the combined efforts of 87 girls, was awarded a Highly Commended. The girls made a carousel horse, embroidered letters and wrote on the background.

‘Our quilt represents the colour and vibrancy of a fair which everyone can enjoy which all the pupils enjoyed making’, said the girls.

GCSE Results 01 September 2011
At last the waiting was over and 25th August had finally arrived, the day of the GCSE results. The first girls arrived just before 9'clock to pick up their results and they opened the envelope both eager and nervous to see what was inside. Some found a quiet place to open it by themselves while others found friends to share the moment with them. There was no need for nerves for the Year 11 girls had achieved the best GCSE results that the school had seen. 74.3% of the grades were at A* or A with 93.9% of the grades at grade B or above.

This had been a year group that had worked hard to achieve their success. They had supported and encouraged each other and had taken up all the opportunities and advice that teachers at The Mount School had offered them. Their teachers and parents were proud of their success; it was so good to see their efforts rewarded.

With this standard of the results the girls talked excitedly about the future and moving on to study A levels at schools such as Henrietta Barnet, St Michaels, Fortismere and Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls. They felt fully prepared for the future, confident that the preparation they had gained at The Mount School made them ready for the next step in their education, wherever they aspired for it to be.

'A' Level Results 18 August 2011
There was a great deal of excitement as girls opened their AS and A2 results.

Among the Year 13 who came into school were Amelia, Hannah, Victoria and Bertha who all achieved the grades they needed to go on to the University of their choice. Amelia will be studying Viking History at UCL; Hannah will be going up to Nottingham to study Classical Civilisation; Victoria is heading to Chester to take Spanish and Journalism and Bertha’s A* in Maths will stand her in good stead when taking Biochemical Engineering also at UCL.

There were some squeals of delight amongst the AS students too who chatted to Mr Broadhurst about their excellent Maths grades for the modules they had taken. Talented Sepi, one of our Year 10, was very pleased to have achieved an A grade in her AS Farsi exam.

If past experience is anything to go by, we are sure that all those girls going on to University will enjoy every minute. We all wish them well and ‘keep in touch’!

The Wizard of Oz Junior Production 15 July 2011
All girls in reception to Year 6 were involved in this year’s summer production of The Wizard of Oz. The girls did not have long to learn their lines, rehearse their songs and practice their dance routines.

The whole show was put on by Director of Music Mrs Hirsch and music teacher Miss Bausor, with the dance teacher providing the excellent choreography. The junior teachers helped with the costumes whilst Ms Green produced all the wonderful masks that helped bring the characters alive.

The girls really excelled themselves with their dramatic crow dance, swaying poppies and the popular songs by Dorothy, Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man that had everyone humming as they left.

Staff News! 15 July 2011

On the last day of term we said a fond farewell to many members of staff.

She will be missed by the girls for her enthusiasm in the classroom and her school productions and by the staff for her ‘makeover’ tips and for senior choir!
Mrs Saad – Maths Teacher. Madeeha was with us for 4 years. She will be missed by the girls she taught and the staff she worked with for her professionalism and friendly approach.

Mrs Stevens – Physics supply teacher. Rouksana did a splendid job covering for maternity leave.

There were 9 choirs competing in the competition including choirs from Goldwyn’s and Highgate. Our choir sang an arrangement of Eva Cassidy’s version of ‘Over The Rainbow’ and the song ’My Face is Made of Onion’ by Jenny Gould. The adjudicator Graham Trew awarded The Mount School a merit, so the girls should be very proud of their performance. The competition was won by Sacred Heart School, Southwark. Thank you to Mrs Hirsch for working with the girls and giving them this opportunity and to our talented girls for singing so beautifully on our behalf.

Year 11's last day in school 13 May 2011

It was a lovely day for all the pupils and staff at school on Wednesday 11th May. Not only did we enjoy the good weather, but we were entertained by the fabulous costumes Year 11 were wearing on their last ever day of school. In fact, whilst we were having our morning staff meeting we could hear the cheers, clapping and giggles of delight coming from the Year 11 form room, as they saw each other for the first time in their outfits.

Year 11 had gone to so much trouble. There was Peter Pan, Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, a couple of Superwomans, Little Red Riding Hood, Fred(die) Flinstone and The Mad Hatter to name a few. Samia, in her Elmo costume and Katie as Kermit the Frog must be congratulated on getting through the day in their warm outfits, although I believe they took the head part of their costumes off during lessons! I think the teachers had a hard time keeping a straight face. I know myself and Mr Sumray did whilst we were having a serious discussion about the GCSE art exam with Banait dressed as Mini Mouse in her spotted red dress, mouse ears and a cute black nose!

The highlight of the day has to be when they all went over to the Junior block at break. They played with and talked to the Year 0 to Year 6 pupils and the Juniors thought it was fantastic. I know that Rhea felt very nostalgic being in the Junior part of the school as she has been at The Mount since Year 0. Miss Sweeny and Rhea were having great fun reminiscing about all the mischief Rhea used to get up to. It was a great day and I am very proud to have been their Head of Year. I wish them all the best for their GCSEs.

The story is set in Crete and Athens and follows Theseus’s quest to defeat the Minotaur. The chorus spoke together in rhyme in the style of Ancient Greek theatre and girls wore togas to set the mood. The cast found this performance an enjoyable way of learning a new myth as did the audience.

Talent Show and Collections for Japan Red Cross Appeal The Mount School, Mill Hill 25 March 2011

As a school community we have been greatly saddened by the images and news from Japan over these past days since the devastating earthquake and tsunami. This has been an especially sad time for us as we have a large Japanese community including around 38 Japanese families currently at the school.

Pupils, parents and staff were keen to fundraise for the Red Cross appeal. Collections took place in school during the week organised by the School Parliament. The girls ran a ‘Talent Show’, charging £1 entrance. A big thank you to Hanna and her team of judges for organizing and hosting the event so well. The winners were four of our Year 4 girls who sang a beautiful Japanese song.  Also on Friday many Japanese parents were in and around school at the beginning and end of the day to help with the collection. Judging by the buckets I am sure we have raised a huge amount.

If you didn’t manage to donate, its not too late. Please send your donations into school with your daughter, either in cash or by cheque made payable to ‘The Mount School Limited’ and write on the back of the cheque that you wish the money to go to the Japan Red Cross appeal. We received a letter in January from the Revd Philip Davison saying that ‘It was a delight to host’ our carol service and ‘the girls sang, read and played very well’. On 29th November, Year 9 visited the Cast Gallery in the Classics Faculty in Cambridge. This museum contains copies of many famous Greek and Roman statues, and, as the real statues are scattered in museums all over the world, this provided a rare chance to see these statues as they might have really looked. Pupils were particularly intrigued to see the statues at their real size, and there was also a painted kore statue, so that they could see how the Greeks decorated their statues. Year 9 are currently studying Greek art and architecture, so this trip provided them with an excellent opportunity to see the text book come to life!

‘It will appeal to any student of modern history and politics, or anyone interested in the twentieth century’, says Mr Havardi. ‘The book has been 5_ years in the making but feels like 500! I became fascinated in Winston Churchill seven years ago when watching films such as ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’, all set in the golden age of films and a time of British achievement. Listening to Churchill’s speeches sent a shiver down my spine. His powerful words reflected his genius. As a former soldier he had been a prisoner of war in the Boer War. He was acutely aware of how cruel war could be and of the enormous sacrifices that made war possible. Churchill also sympathised with the common man whilst thinking little of the aristocratic House of Lords. As reflected in the title of my book, I really do believe he deserves too be remembered as the greatest Briton of them all.’

The book was launched on Friday 27th November, and is available for purchase. Please go to the link:

Celebrating Trees at The Mount School 12th November 2009
The Mount School have branched out this autumn and planted a tree as part of a UK wide project.

Autumn is a time for tree planting and here at The Mount we have decided to celebrate everything about these wonderful plants.

BBC Breathing Places Schools provided us with a rowan tree that we have planted in a special ceremony on 10th November. Over 70 junior girls watched and assisted as the Head Teacher, Ms. Cozens, planted the small rowan in a prime position at the front of the school. These girls will be able to watch the tree grow as they continue their life in the school.

“It was a lovely occasion that the girls could celebrate together”, said Miss. Sweeney, Head of Juniors.

With eleven thousand schools, across the UK, Doing One Thing for nature and planting trees, we are all leaving a lasting legacy for wildlife in our schools and our communities.

Art Exhibition at Chorak Bakery 3rd June 2009

In April we held the second Mount School Art Exhibition at the Chorak Bakery in East Finchley. If you do not know Chorak, I can highly recommend a visit. It is an independently run café that exhibits the work of local artists.

When I approached the owner, Jevad, he was thrilled at the chance to show art created by school pupils. We exhibited work from Year 7 through to Year 13 with examples of painting, printmaking and photography. What a delight it was to see the wide range of art work on show, made even better by enjoying a cup of tea and a delicious slice of cake (baked on site).

Jevad said that his customers thoroughly enjoyed our exhibition and gave him very positive feedback. Maybe I am biased, but I tend to agree with them!

Roman Mysteries to Celebrate Book Week 6th March 2009
Celebrated author Caroline Lawrence, creator of the popular Roman Mysteries series (recently screened on CBBC) visited The Mount School on World Book Day - Thursday 5th March 2009.

Caroline, who now lives in an apartment overlooking the Thames, was born in London and returned to her native USA to grow up in California. Having studied Classics at Berkeley and Cambridge, she combines her love of art history, ancient languages and travel in her hugely successful series for children set in Ancient Rome.

At the Mount she talked about how to write a Roman Mystery, answered questions and signed books for our Year 4 to 7 girls, and Year 6 children from our neighboring St Paul’s Primary School, who joined us for the event.

Imogen (Year 4) writes as follows:
We had a very exciting afternoon. Caroline Lawrence, who writes Roman Mysteries, came in to talk about it and to sign copies of her book. She had a lot of things to tell us about ancient Rome and Pompeii. She also had a slide show about the books and introduced us to the four main characters in the books. I liked the way she gave steps about how to be write a good story.

She had some funny stories about the Romans and how they wiped their bottoms with a sponge on a stick and how they used a clay oil lamp with a piece of string. She used some of these ideas in her stories too. It was really fun and I enjoyed meeting a real author. She signed my books with a special message in Latin too!

There are a few places still available for Monday evenings 4-5pm – first come first served. See Mrs Hughes.
Press Release February 2009

– Mount School Art Exhibition at the Arts Depot

22 pieces of stunning artwork have made an eye catching display on the first floor of the Arts Depot in North Finchley. Inspirational art teachers Jason Sumray, a practicing painter and Sharon Mitchell, whose specialism is in textiles, have chosen some of the best pieces by GCSE, AS and A2 level students to form a display that will be on public view until 2nd March 2009.

The pieces show the wide range of art taught at The Mount School including painting in various media, print making, photography and textiles. For GCSE Art, a popular subject, students concentrate on two dimensional work, exploring Fine Art in drawing, painting, mixed media and printmaking. Three separate A-Levels are offered; Painting and Drawing, Textiles and Photography.

On 12th February, many gathered for a private view of the display. Amongst them were some of the students whose art was being admired. Fiona Salisbury’s display of fine art monoprints shows four individual prints all using an original drawing of skulls. This piece is forming part of Fiona’s AS coursework and she is finding printmaking a lot of fun, with its many creative stages.

Shaleen Patel, also an AS student, has on display a fantastic study of skulls and organic material painted in watered down acrylics. 'Allowing the paint to drip down the canvas brought much more freedom to my work' said Shaleen 'and I am delighted with the result'. This was something Mr Sumray had encouraged her to do to break away from her more precise earlier work.

When asked how much help was given by the teachers both girls replied that to begin with they were given much direction and help with materials, techniques and ideas. As they progressed and were producing exam work, they were expected to be much more independent and experiment with different techniques and media. Both felt art had allowed them to develop and they always looked forward to art lessons!

Other art on display includes a fantastic photography study by Sophie Shaw that formed part of her A2 photography coursework, and wonderful textiles by Sarah Sklar, also an A2 student. Photography and textiles, taught by specialist teachers, are popular and always produce stunning and thought provoking displays.

Mount School Girls Excel at Exams
Mount School Girls Excel at Exams for Overseas Students

Students at The Mount School, Mill Hill, have for many years been excelling at internationally recognised exams for overseas students.

2009 has been no exception. 17 girls took JET, KET, PET and FCE exams at the end of last year and now the results have been published we are very pleased to announce that every single girl passed. Six Junior girls all achieved the top grade of distinction in JET SET exams; six girls passed their KET Cambridge exams, five of whom achieved the top grade of merit; five girls passed their PET Cambridge exams; and last but not least, five girls passed their FCE Cambridge exams. A huge congratulations to all!

Lisako Narita and Akari Ishida, two of our year 7’s (pictured top right) achieved an ‘A’ at the age of 11 in their FCE (First Certificate in English) - a major achievement, as the average age for candidates is 20 years old. The University of Cambridge state that because FCE exams focus on all four communication skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) plus the use of English, students increase their confidence in using English in everyday situations. FCE is a truly international exam, recognised by thousands of industrial, administrative and service-based employers as a qualification in intermediate English.

'I was very happy to have passed and got an 'A' for my exam', said Akari. 'My Dad was especially proud of me and pleased with my result'.

Lisako said 'because the barrier for 'A' was 80% I felt really pleased. Miss Ferson was really helpful in improving our speech and preparing us for the papers.'

Both girls agreed that working for the exam had improved their vocabulary in other lessons.

We also congratulate two of our Kenyan girls: Linda Mandu, who achieved the top grade of a merit in her PET exam and Irene Waweru, who achieved the top grade of a distinction in her JET exam.

Last, but not least, we congratulate two very able Turkish sisters, Rumeysa who achieved a B in her FCE exam and Zeynep Uludag, who achieved the top grade of a distinction in her JET exam.

Uniquely, The Mount School offers overseas students the best of both worlds, being able to study a full curriculum whilst being supported by specialist ESOL teachers.

Karen Ferson, who runs the schools ESOL department, believes that "the real benefit of being successful in these exams is that it provides the foundation for their outstanding achievements at GCSE. I am so proud of all my students and their fantastic results."
