“Cuddle drug” oxytocin and its effects
The effects of oxytocin on humans are one of the hottest topics discussed when it comes to male – female relationships. Some call this hormone the “love drug” or the “cuddle drug” because it’s one of the key components that cause women to emotionally bond with men. This hormone is released in the female body every time they make a pleasant, loving physical contact with another person, making the woman feel safe and calm. The more of the hormone is produced, the more close she feels to that person, and that is how attachment is formed.
The downside of oxytocin is that it’s also produced during intercourse. In a long term relationship, that’s a great thing – helping partners bond even more with every new sexual encounter, keeping the relationship stable. The downside of it is when a woman engages in casual sex in what is supposed to be a one night stand. Once the whole thing is over, the woman usually has the need to cuddle and be close to her sexual partner, and the one sole thing to blame is the love hormone, oxytocin. Since the whole attachment thing is going on at a subconscious, involuntary level, you can imagine how women easily get their hearts broken by bonding to men who don’t really want anything serious.
While some women might curse that hormone from ruining their love life, it’s important to know that without oxytocin there would probably be no families, at least not functional ones. Besides creating an attachment bond with a potential partner, oxytocin works the same way on a mother – child basis. It is released during labor to ease the pain and create the special bond with the baby from the second it comes to this world, and works by raising the level of protectiveness in the mother, waking up protective instincts that are meant to keep her offspring from harm. Some studies show that high levels of the love hormone cause the mothers to cuddle with their babies more and to have more physical and eye contact with them.
Another interesting effect of oxytocin on humans is that it makes us more generous. An interesting study conducted at the Claremont University in California included participants which were given either high doses of oxytocin or placebo. They were asked to split a sum of money with a stranger, and the study showed that people high on the “cuddle drug” gave 80% more money than the participants who were on placebo.
It seems like the whole conclusion comes to the good old conservative “don’t have one night stands” stance, but there is still some hope. By understanding how their body works, women can take some time to detach the hormonal madness from what they’re actually feeling. So, if you’re a woman, next time you find yourself fantasizing about the dreamy guy you’ve just met and spent the last night with, you might want to keep both feet on the ground and think things true before engaging in wedding plans.
