TOKYO—Japan's ruling party officially announced its decision to suspend its former leader Ichiro Ozawa on Tuesday, a move that threatens to tear the party apart after being in power for just a year and a half.
"Unfortunately, [Ozawa] didn't explain his position to parliament," said the head of the DPJ's ethics committee, Kozo Watanabe. "We had no choice but to take such a measure," he told reporters in parliament. "I believe the public will understand."
