Canadian lottery – the basics

As we have mentioned in the article on the history of Canadian lottery, we do not have the richest history when it comes to lottery, but it is safe to say that lottery is as popular in Canada as it is in other parts of the world. The chances of winning huge jackpots are attractive to a large percentage of people and this has resulted in a number of different lottery games becoming available in Canada. In this article, we will mention some of these games and we will introduce you to the world of Canadian lottery. You might know some of these facts, but we are also sure that you will be able to learn a lot.

First of all, it is important to differentiate between Canadian lotteries that are specific to certain provinces and the two national lotteries in Canada. As you would imagine, the provincial lotteries are not associated with the biggest jackpots, but since less people play these games, you might actually win more money by playing these. However, in the end, it is all about the jackpots and this is where the two national Canadian lottery games rule – Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max.

Lotto 6/49 is actually the original national lottery in Canada and it started in 1982. Before this game, all lotteries involved random numbers that were given to you. You could not choose them. Of course, this made people very interested in Lotto 6/49 as they thought that their chances would increase if they were allowed to choose their own numbers. Of course, the fact that the jackpots were the largest in the history of Canadian lotteries also did its part of the job. The game did not change since its beginnings and the only two things that changed are the price of the ticket (going from $1 to $2 in 2004) and the value of jackpots which grew as the tickets became more expensive. To this date, the largest ever jackpot in Canadian lottery was a Lotto 6/49 jackpot in 2005 that was $54.3 and that was shared by 17 workers from the same gas and Oil Company.

The second national lottery in Canada is Lotto Max, which was established instead of Lotto Super 7. From the year 2009, it is called Lotto Max and it is the second most popular lottery in Canada. It is somewhat different from Lotto 6/49 as you pay $5 for a single ticket where you choose 7 numbers but also get additional two sets of 7 numbers that are selected automatically for you. When the draw is up, you get to play all three sequences of numbers, being able to win with all three. Of course, for the jackpot, you need to have all 7 numbers from the same set.
