UNITED
NATIONS,
June 27 --
After Kofi
Annan's
invitation to
meeting on
Syria
in Geneva on
June 30 did
not include
Iran, Inner
City Press
asked a
range of
Security
Council
Ambassadors
why not.
A
well placed
non-Western
Council
diplomat said
the US made
clear that "if
Iran goes, the
Madame will
not,"
referring to
Hillary
Clinton.
Then, he said,
"Saudi Arabia
was also
blocked, some
sort of
linkage."
But
given Annan
deputy
Al Kidwa's
"ultimatum" on
June 26,
first reported
by
Inner City
Press, that
if Annan might
stop unless
there is a
meaningful
outcome,
what can come
out of the
Geneva
meeting?
The
non-Western
diplomat
laughed and
said, "Any
written
outcome is
meaningful to
us."
Meanwhile,
while
as Inner City
Press reported
yesterday the
format of High
Commissioner
for Human
Rights Navi
Pillay's
briefing to
the Security
Council has
been agreed --
mostly on
Syria under
the Middle
East
agenda item,
with the
understanding
she will also
address Libya
-- it
will NOT take
place on June
28 as France
had requested.
The
non-Western
diplomat told
Inner City
Press, and
French
Ambassador
Gerard Araud
then confirmed
to Inner City
Press outside
the Council,
that Pillay's
briefing is
now slated for
Monday, July
2. What will
Annan have
concluded by
then about the
June 30
meeting?
Meanwhile,
both
Annan and his
erstwhile
successor Ban
Ki-moon had
publicly said
that
Iran should
participate.
How will they
explain
getting
vetoed, in
essence, by
Hillary
Clinton? Watch
