I have long believed the Helena Independent Record has a decidedly liberal bias. Today my curiosity found even more evidence to support my belief.
I was reading the Helena IR Sunday looking at the bestseller book lists. I was looking at the nonfiction hardcover list when I noticed Rachel Maddow’s book ‘Drift’ was listed as number two on the list. But I couldn’t find Bill O’Reilly’s book ‘Killing Lincoln’ or Edward Klein’s book ‘The Amateur’.
So I quickly searched my way to the New York Times bestseller’s list. There I found ‘Killing Lincoln’ at number six and ‘The Amateur” at number one. I had to search way down the list to find Maddow’s book ‘Drift’ at twenty-eighth on the list.
So even in the entrainment and lifestyles section of the Helena IR they have found a way to give a biased view of the world to their captive readers. No wonder there is such a large group of liberals in Helena. The ordinary citizens’ only news sources in Helena are all liberal.
Subtle bias influences people so that they don’t even know they are being influenced. And the Helena IR seems to have learned this lesson well.
Censorship is one of those “It doesn’t happen here kind of things.” But, obviously, it is going on right here in good ol’ Montana – and in our public school system:
A high-school principal told Oscar-winner Gerald Molen he could not deliver his speech because he is a “right-wing conservative…” Gerald Molen won a best picture Oscar for co-producing Schindler’s List with Steven Spielberg and has produced such Hollywood blockbusters as the first two Jurassic Park films and Twister. He’s a former U.S. Marine and is a sought-after motivational speaker…Molen is one of those rare conservatives in Hollywood (he’s even making a documentary called 2016, based on the Dinesh D’Souza book The Roots of Obama’s Rage) and because of that, he says, Ronan High School principal Tom Stack decided to disinvite him — and he didn’t tell him so until after Molen made the 90-minute drive from his home in Bigfork, Mont… When speaking to students, Molen’s presentations usually invoke Oskar Schindler, who is credited with saving 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust and is the subject of the Oscar-winning 1993 film that Molen co-produced with Spielberg and Branko Lustig.
For the Ronan students, Molen planned to use Schindler as an example of what courageous individuals could accomplish, and he also planned to ask them to “imagine your future is a movie. Forty years from now, you’re writing a script about your accomplishments. What would that script look like?”
“It was a totally apolitical speech,” Molen said.
Read the whole story here and Mr. Molen’s letter to the Daily Interlake here.
Are you shocked? Amazed? Disgusted????
It’s time we all get behind Sandy Welch for Superintendent of Public Instruction. We need a new emphasis on educating our children rather than indoctrinating them!
H/T to Loki for the link to the story.
No big shock to most of us, but Ken Miller’s campaign has officially crashed and burned. First the Northwest Montana Patriots Association (a/k/a TEA Party) sent out a scathing email on Wednesday disavowing Ken’s claims of being the TEA Party’s favorite candidate:
The purpose of this letter is to make it known that NOT ALL Montana Patriots are for Ken Miller and that his claim to have the endorsement of the Northwest Association of Patriots is an outright LIE!! Up until a couple of months ago we thought Ken Miller was a nice guy, yet, not capable of running the State of Montana due to having zero education, zero executive experience, and the fact that KEN MILLER has lost almost all his campaign staff on two separate occasions! We were going to keep our thoughts to ourselves, but after all that has happened over the past two months we have decided to speak up!
The message goes on to cite three more reasons for their – ummm – “lack of support”: Pending charges of violations of campaign finance laws filed by his former campaign Treasurer; not only breaking the Montana ban on robo-calls, but his lame excuse that “the law is unenforceable ” as justification for the infraction; and finally, his dishonest claims that the conservative organization had endorsed Miller. Seems they aren’t too thrilled with possibly losing their 501C-4 status just so Kenny can beef up his imaginary “robust” campaign. Funny that.
To top that off, today was really not a good day for the Miller team either. The Commissioner of Political Practices issued a ruling on the allegations of campaign finance violations – it is certainly not pretty if you thought you were supporting an ethical, Christian man. There really isn’t much doubt that honesty and integrity are in short supply in the Miller for Governor organization.
Apparently the whispers that Ken blushingly acknowledges on his website of “being too honest for politics” came from voices in his own head.
Say good night Ken – the party’s over.

SCOTUS Justice Breyer was robbed in the Caribbean three months ago (by the machete wielding gardener). This week his house was burglarized.
This comes about a month after $1 million dollars was allocated to 12 new policemen to protect justices. Part of this was a request by Justice Breyer for additional funding after the shooting in Arizona that killed U.S. District Judge Roll (during the Gifford shooting). Who was among 12 killed that day. He was not there in an official capacity.
I find this disturbing. Yes we need to provide protection for the judges during their normal court duties. But are we really going to provide them protection from every day crimes that the rest of us have to deal with. The government is creating a ruling class and providing them with extra protection. We are now a country of the ruling class and commoners. Those who get extra protection and those who don’t qualify. I guess the equal protecting promised by the founding fathers no longer counts.
Maybe they should just have given Justice Breyer a concealed weapon permit. Whoops… that’s right. No guns in Washington D.C.
Quite… listen closely, I think you can hear the hum of Jefferson spinning in his grave.

Governor Brown is in deep (caution explicit technical term follows) doo-doo. California is not only bankrupt, they are really really bankrupt. Tax receipts are down, the rich are leaving, businesses are leaving, and even the illegal aliens are leaving. All the years of liberalism has caught up with the public coffers. They are the biggest example of the failure of liberalism in America… well besides the USA.
There is only one thing for a liberal governor in a liberal state to do. He must follow Paul Krugman’s advice. He must borrow billions more and immediately spend it on green jobs to stimulate the economy. Preferably union jobs. He must also raise taxes on the rich, those making $50,000 or more. Hollywood needs to pay their fair share. Have you seen how much they made on the Avengers? Hollywood needs to be taxed at 90% or more. If Governor Brown really believes liberalism is the way it is the only course of action.
Instead he will probably ask President Obama for a bailout. And with this being an election year and Obama desperately needing California’s Electoral Votes this should be interesting. Pass the popcorn.

Our founding fathers feared a large central government. They did everything they could to make sure there would not be a large central government. Including passing the Posse Comitatus Act. For those who have forgotten it limits the states from using the federal military for enforcement of local laws. This includes the use of military arms. Therefore no tanks downtown to enforce traffic laws. Now that would cure all the problems at malfunction junction.
Over the last 236 years we have had a steady infringement of the federal government into local laws. From the outright extortion by threat of withhold highway funds if the states do not write DUI laws and seatbelt laws to their standards, to the regulation of light bulbs, toilets and the type of clothes washers sold.
Yet there are now plans to put drones in the skies over America. Of course they will write rules and limit the use of drones… for now. But how long will it be before they ‘have’ to make exceptions to the rules. Can you imagine the outcry if suddenly they put Apache helicopters over Los Angeles to quell the crime in the ghettos. Got to start slowly.
These drones will (eventually if not immediately) have the capabilities to spy on you in your backyard. How long before they will be able to listen in on your conversations in your house. And they plan on keeping the information even if no crime was committed for months, in case they find out about a crime later. Then they can go to instant replay, then the penalty flag.
I can’t understand why liberals have not gone apoplectic over this proposal. Hasn’t anyone told them it can spot marijuana plants in the garden? Maybe they think as part of the inteligencia they will be exempt. They must not have read the history books. Governments always kill their own first.
As T.S. Eliot thought, we go out not with a bang but a whimper… or the muffled hum of a drone.

Today’s IR had a guest editorial from former Secretary of State Bob Brown. He also ran against Brian Schweitzer for governor in 2004.
Today he bemoaned the failure of Sen. Richard Lugar in his re-election campaign. He cried about the loss of compromise in Congress.
This article disgusts me. We have the most partisan Congress in history. Democrats shut out Republicans in key meetings. There was no reaching across the aisles by Democrats during the Obamacare passing. President Obama made recess appointments while Congress was in session without compromising. Democrats don’t compromise on their Supreme Court nominations, but they force Republicans to compromise, can we spell Bork. We have the Department of Justice prosecuting cases based on their political merit to the Democrat party.
And Mr. Brown bemoans the loss of a compromiser in the Senate. No wonder Montana can’t find enough conservative Republicans to run for office. They are judged by their peers as to how well they compromise with Democrats making them indistinguishable from Democrats.
It is no wonder Mr. Brown lost the election in 2004. He was running under the wrong party designation. He must have compromised himself into that position.
The Democrats are digging in and doubling their partisan efforts and attacks. They are not compromising their ideology. Now is not the time for Republicans to compromise.
The real news is not that Senator Lugar lost. But that the Tea Party backed candidate won. I guess rumors of the demise of the Tea Party were just partisan stories from the main stream media.
It is time for Republicans to return to conservatism.

President Obama cut oil well drilling permits in the gulf and on public lands. Now he is taking credit for the US producing more oil although all of the production is from permits passed during the Bush presidency. He has failed in recovering the economy so badly that the illegal aliens are streaming back to Mexico for jobs so Obama is taking credit for lower illegal aliens in this country.
Governor Schweitzer fought the legislature on the budget. He complained that they were not spending enough. Now he is the darling of the East coast talk shows bragging about ‘his’ budget surplus. (And by the way, after BS’s little statement on Romney and his Mormon heritage I will scream if I ever see BS noted as a ‘moderate’ Democrat. He is a far left anti-Mormon fanatic who is job hunting.)
Attorney General Steve Bullock fought conservatives who wanted to join the Supreme Court fight against Obamacare saying it was a frivolous cause. Now he is taking credit for saving the state money. (The image of a leech suddenly pops into my head.)
Liberal Democrats have made taking credit for their failures as success’s an art form this election year. And yet the media never calls them on their illogic. Jay Scott of KBLL radio has taken defending liberal causes to a new height. He touts every study or liberal ‘fact’ checker he can find to refute any stories detrimental to any liberals or their causes. His highlighting every wire story on global warming is making me want to change his name to Global Jay.
It scares me. Not only that the media does not question these absurdities and lies but that the public seems to have such a short term memory that they have forgotten. I hope to maintain my sanity through this election year, because I know my temper won’t last.
p.s. The Helena IR’s political cartoon showed Gingrich in a clown suit and the Doonesbury cartoon called those who listen to Fox news idiots. Another example of the demand for civility applying only to conservatives.
