About Us

The Next Step Fund is a Houston-area non-profit organization committed to putting more students on track to the next step towards higher education. We realize this mission by connecting low-income, at-risk students to college- and career-preparatory learning experiences while they are still in high school. These experiences, or "Fantastic Learning Opportunities" as we call them, enable students to take "healthy risks" by learning and developing in new environments with new people.

Next Step Fund Targets 450 Houston-area Youth this School Year

In the 2011-2012 school year, the Next Step Fund is working with continuing partners: Lee High School and Eastwood Academy, as well as new partners: George I. Sanchez High School, KIPP - Sunnyside High School, KIPP - Generations High School, and EMERGE community organization. All of these organizations and the passionate individuals that lead them actively share our mission to provide low-income youth with the resources and learning experiences necessary to take the next step toward higher education. With expanded efforts across the Houston community, we are confident that we will reach our goal of connecting at least 450 Houston-area students to FLOs in 2011 - 2012!  For more information regarding our Fantastic Learning Opportunities program, please contact our Director of Programs.

Financial Assistance for students goes LIVE!

That's right - Check out the Next Step Fund's Financial Assistance Application on-line this year. A large majority (60 - 75%) of truly "fantastic" youth learning and development programs that occur beyond the traditional classroom have associated costs that can include tuition, travel, and/or materials. At the Next Step Fund, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to participate in a Fantastic Learning Opportunity, regardless of their socio-economic status. For this reason, we provide needs-based partial financial assistance to students at our partner high schools who demonstrate a commitment to the program they've been accepted to. Given our recent expansion and our efforts to connect more deserving youth to more life-changing programs, we invested in an on-line application program that provides for more efficient submission, processing, and awarding of financial assistance applications.

Are you a FLO Alum?

We'd love to hear from you!

At the Next Step Fund, we believe that students' participation in FLOs during high school, can positively impact their long-term success in college and even beyond. If you are a FLO Alum - a student who participated in a Fantastic Learning Opportunity during high school - and would like to found out ways that you can support future FLO participants, please contact us.

We'd also love to hear from you to find out how you're doing. Have you graduated from college yet? If so, where from? Finally, what are your next steps in life?

Of the 13 million children growing up in poverty, only 1 in 10 will graduate from college 1.

This can and must change! The Lee Next Step Fund, also known as the Next Step Fund, works to connect low-income, at-risk youth to life-changing college- and career- preparatory learning experiences beyond the traditional high school classroom. These programs, or "Fantastic Learning Opportunities," challenge students' in new ways and push them to learn and develop beyond their comfort zone. As a result, Fantastic Learning Opportunities propel students to develop the knowledge, skills, and habits that are characteristics of college-bound individuals and positive, productive adults... all while they are still in high school. Read more about our work here, and learn ways that you can help us "change life trajectories."

LizbethRobledo

Lizbeth Robledo, Fantastic Learning Opportunity Alumna (The Woods Project, Summer 2011) will be a sophomore at Eastwood Academy beginning this Fall. Lizbeth wants to consider nursing for a career and has heightened her preparation for college and life by pushing herself to engage in novel learning experiences beyond the classroom. In this picture, Lizbeth smiles for the camera after what was an arduous climb up a mountatin during her leadership development experience at Donner Pass. Congratulations Lizbeth! Keep up the hard work.
