How I benefited from a Pell Grant
I come from a family of five and I’m really glad that I have four siblings. There is always something going on, there is always someone to talk to and when I was a kid, there was always someone who I could play with even on a rainy day when there were no computers and when the only thing you could do was stay indoors. Of course, the family of five isn’t really huge, but there is no denying that it is big, especially if you consider the financial aspect.
Since I am the one in the middle, you can only imagine what my life was like. I always wore hand me down clothes and shoes and I rarely got something new, except when I really, really needed something. Of course, my siblings had it easier because the older kids got to have new clothes and the younger ones as well because by the time it was their turn to wear the clothes, the clothes couldn’t really be worn. However, I never complained because honestly, I never really cared about the money and new things and new clothes.
Unfortunately, the day I wished things had been different for me was when I started thinking about going to college. Once again, my siblings had it easier because they didn’t want that at all. I, on the other hand, really wanted to get a degree. However, I knew that there was no money and I knew that there was little chance that I could get a scholarship because to be honest, I wasn’t really the best student out there. Needless to say, money was a huge problem.
But after talking to my high school counsellor, I soon found out that I was able to apply for a Pell Grant and that there was a strong chance that I get it. I was really excited and as soon as possible, I filled out the FAFSA and applied. Later on, I read about different people who got a Pell Grant and I even talked to some of them. They all said that without this kind of financial assistance, they would have never managed to pay for college and get educated.
And when I found out that I got a Pell Grant and that I got the maximum amount, I was literally jumping for joy. Even though my parents did not have money to send me to college, I had a chance to go to college and do exactly what I wanted. I got a degree and now I have a job that I really, really like.
There is no denying that a Pell Grant is really an excellent opportunity for people like me and if you think that this is something that you could get, don’t hesitate to apply.
